Replacing Defrost lever on 71 K20
The current lever is there but it's not doing anything. I have the replacement lever and cable (if needed) from LMC. Any suggestions or pointers before I start?

Getting ready to start this job. I'm going to replace the fan switch and all the hoses!!! I went with the new plastic style, not OEM. I'm going to pull the bench sit out for room. Any pointers would be greater appreciated!

The best way to work on them is to remove the control head and cables. There are two machine screws under the edge of the dash you need to remove to get the control head out. You have to unplug the connector from the switch on the right side and unplug the light socket from the left side in the back. The cables are held on with small screws and push on clips.

I had to order a flexible HP oil line. The PO put a nice S/S tube right through one of the hoses. I can't get it to move around the hose, so I have to replace it. I have a ground problem in my cluster (everything flashes when the turn signal is on), so maybe I can do all three at the same time. The top lever is broken (part in hand) and I bought all three cables. I like the pointers on lubing the cables. I have to replace the fan switch while I'm in there. |

Finally have all the parts and some time to start replacing the hoses.
While I'm doing that, I need to find out why the heat is always on! The aftermarket A/C is disconnnected (That will be later this summer). Also, when I open the vent (kick plate) on the drivers side, the passenger side doesn't do anything. I see it has a vacuum hose and valve. Is that tied into the A/C or is it on a separate system? I found a great guide - Vintage Air - 29 pages of detailed pics and decent step by step directions. Thanks in advance |

On the vent. I understand now the function for "Fresh Air" vs. inside air. Once I get the A/C hooked up, I don't want fresh air, I just want to freeze my tail off when it is HOT! So, I see I can add a manual lever to the vent just like the driver's side. OK everyone, what are your thoughts?
(God knows what kind of shape the A/C is in, I'm sure it's a major project!!!) Keep the vacuum control or go to manual on the vent? |
