Re: Axle codes
My axle code was three letters TDE (3.07:1). Some are two letters like HB, LL, RA HJ, MK etc. etc. Found on the top of the passenger side axle tube about 6" from differential center housing.

Re: Axle codes
I think that the HA code for a 1972 was a 3.73 ratio whereas RHA was a 3.07 for 1972 based on old posts ONLY. I can not find a chart. GMC Paul's site has some codes for 67 and 68 but not later years. Someone will come up with a definite answer for you.

Re: Axle codes
the h.a. codes are out of a 67 and a 68 and the rha is out of a 72. so that sounds good. how do u guys think the 3.07 gears will do behind a 283 with a mild cam and a saginaw 4 speed? thanks again.

Re: Axle codes
I'm still trying to figure mine out so I can order a differential kit to replace all the bearings. I have a '72 1/2 ton and the axle housing code is RHA W155 1. I'm guessing it's a 3.07 but not sure. I'm thinking I can jack up one side and count drive shaft revolutions per one full turn of the rear wheel, as opposed to pulling the differential cover and counting teeth. It would seem there are no good decoding charts available for these trucks. I've got a couple of excellent "Chevrolet by the Numbers" books, but they are mainly for cars...truck codes are not listed. Any other suggestions?
