1960 chevy-wierd options? post rare options
hey i am just wondering how rare or wierd this is, if it even is at all. i have a 1960 chevy shortbox. it has the high hump floor, with 4 speed military tranny (7:1) first gear, and 283 v8. all original., it has posi as well. there are a couple other things i was wondering about, my grill doesnt say chevrolet on it, it has the fat lower bar(think its 60) but is blank. my antena hole was on the driver side piece above the fender, and passenger side has no hole. the truck is originally yellow. i think it was a city of winnipeg truck? maybe this is all very common, i was just wondering what u guys thought. also i have a 64 style hood, but it apears to be original, with 60 lights in it. my grandpa bought a 1961 gmc brand new in 61, and it had the hood like this too, and also a friend of my dads had a 1960 chevy with this hood from factory. his truck was a firetruck originally. now i know ur going to say im nuts and its not possible, but i am not joking.
let me know what u think. any wierd or rare options out there?

a common thing was a 62 up hood as a dealer replacement for the 60-61 hood, if it was damaged, or if the owner wanted it changed for the better visibility that the later hood offered. the parking light lenses were the same 60-62, and then 63-66(amber)

very interesting. yeah i got the 1960 lights in mine. but that is still wierd tho, cuz i know for a fact grandpas truck had the later style hood on his 61 gmc. it was a grain truck, did this hood come out earlier for gmc? his was never changed it was there from the factory in 61.

The "military" tranny is just a 4 speed stick with a low first gear. The most common transmission for a truck of this era.

Here are a couple of pics of a 1960 grill....
If yours doesn't have the "CHEVROLET" across the bottom, then it is a 1961 grill as shown here....

I recently ran across something very strange myself. 1963 chev with what appeared to be the GMC custom cab trim, but ONLY around the door windows and then it butted into the sail panel trim when you closed the doors. I myself could find nothing telling me these were not factory doors and the holes for the trim had factory color paint in them telling me it was not someones after thought.. YET I have never seen this trim on any chevy truck and I live in the land where there is one of these trucks in every other back yard. So all I can assume is 30 years ago someone replaced the doors with GMC doors and repainted the truck correctly.. Very odd Last edited by 72bigred; 02-16-2010 at 07:58 PM. |

Re: 1960 chevy-wierd options? post rare options
wow thanks for the pic of the grille. yeah i guess i got a 61 grill, with 60 grill bars lol. very interesting. my grill is bent anyway so i guess i will try find the proper 60 grill, but the 61 grill looked good with the bars , and no chevrolet. yeah the hood thing is wierd, i dont have a picture of my grandpas gmc, he does, i will try remember to get it some day. i dont have pics of dads friends fire truck(that one coulda been replaced , no proof of that since he didnt own it from new. i guess my truck probably had the hood replaced too, but the thing with grandpas truck still puzzles me a bit. im going to keep the newer style hood on mine anyway( i kinda like it better, if it had the proper hood i woulda left it though). thanks jon with the antenae info haha. yeah makes sense, i was just wondering though. that door trim looks really good actually.

jon, would it make sense if my grandpa bought his truck in late 61, that his hood coulda been the newer style? --changed because of damage or sumthing..not sure when that hood came out first
