Big A$$ Truck!

Ladies and Gent's check out this beast!

http://stlouis.craigslist.org/cto/1615398173.html

This listing is for a one of a kind 1978 Chevrolet C65 Dually conversion, in the very rare crew cab version. It's a 2 ton truck that was shortened and made into a dually. It was in Arizona all it's life except for the past year here in Illinois, so is virtually rust free, and in very solid condition. The truck has both gooseneck, and very heavy duty bumper pull hitches. It has a current IL inspection, good thru march/april, and I currently have it licensed with "D" plates (12000 IB), although you can license it higher if you want to pull more (up to 26,000 lb if you want to stay under CDL). It has hydraulic brakes, so no CDL or air brake certification required to drive it. The marine 454 has around 13000 miles on it, and the chassis mileage is unknown. Runs and drives good, and I drove this home 1600+ miles from AZ last year without any trouble. I'm having to sell it to pay bills! It could use a little work, some interior updating, etc. Here's the specs:

1978 Chevy C65 Crew Cab (3+3) Dually -

Marine 454 V8, Edelbrock carb, dual exhaust, 5 speed manual transmission + 2-speed rear, 120 gallon long range fuel tank, custom made aluminum diamond tread running boards, heavy duty bumper pull & gooseneck hitches, 22.5 budd style wheels with stainless simulators. Arizona rust free truck! $9,500.00

Check out a full page of clickable pix of the truck here: http://bigasstrux.com/fouke/indyc65.html

Re: Big A$$ Truck!

looks pretty cool, I cant really comment on the price, but it looks like the gooseneck hitch is not set up in the correct place, typically arent they suspose to be over the rear axle?

Re: Big A$$ Truck!

Is there a demand for this type of truck and if so, how much would you pay for one?

They're asking $9500, which means lower than 9500 and i know it took more than 9500 to put it together.

Would you pay 24K for one of these?

BTW, i think the 73-86 medium duty truck had the best front end design ever for any medium duty truck.

Re: Big A$$ Truck!

I wouldn't say they are in high demand, Rare yes! There are very few crewcabs.
Is it Practical? Kinda depends on where you live and driving habits. No matter where you drive people will surely get the hell out of the way.
Pricing is tough, if I had the money I would buy it right now for the asking price even though it might be worth more or less.
Show us a pic of your $24k build vs this $9500 truck.

What i'm trying to get at is:

1) i've thought about this as a bu$ine$$ idea---get a c-50,60 or whatever and put a crew body and bed on top etc, turn around and charge big $$$.

2) Unless they found a med-duty cab chassis in decent shape AND they found a clean crew cab i think it would cost more than 9500 to put it together especially when you consider the time it would take.

3) So, if financing was made available, would you(and do you think others would also) take the plunge at 25K-34K?

What would go into "my" 25K build would be to make everything look new(obviously, it wouldn't be new) and quality. The truck in the ad looks good, but again i don't think they could have made it work for less than 9500 unless they got lucky and even so i think it's underpriced.

Re: Big A$$ Truck!

P.S.
Ok, upon further reading of the ad, s/he is selling it to pay bills, so there is no profit intent. Furthermore s/he didn't build it, they bought it from AZ.

Also, looking at the link, it looks ratty. With my build, everything would be refurbished to look new or if nessesary parts would be replaced to be new---hence i feel the 25K range is reasonable.

The key here is finding/discovering if there is demand or not.

Re: Big A$$ Truck!

P.P.S.

i actually came up with another idea, which i'll discuss soon as it ties in with another concept dealing with these trucks which i wanted to discuss in another post as soon as i scan in the diagrams.

In a nutshell, make a mega-pickup with a tandem c-7500 chassis!

Would you buy that?

Re: Big A$$ Truck!

I'm sure others will respond but here's my opinion. I don't think a 1978 custom built crewcab 2ton dually truck is equal to say a brand new 2010 crewcab or dually.
The man to ask is the actually builder at www.BigAssTrux.com he would give you further insite of how many he has built and sold and how much demand he has gotten while being in business.
There is another section on this forum called Medium duty trucks and there aren't that many of these trucks around unless they are still in service through city parks and rec. Or construstion companies with dump or boxes on the backs.
I think it would be a tough sell but maybe not.

Bradbury: You wanted a crew cab! That med duty is the one to get. That thing is awesome! Nice interior in it, some 24" Alcoas, paint job...you get the picture.

That is an awesome truck. 120 gallon fuel capacity. Holy Cow. I bet the gas stations would love to see ya pull in, and frequently at that.

Well I'm pulling into gas station right now. $2.55 for unleaded.

All I need is $9500 and a little peer pressure.

Re: Big A$$ Truck!

Let's do the math just on filling up the gas tank. 120gallons x $2.50per gallon. That's $300 in gas. Yikes!

Re: Big A$$ Truck!

1) pls see my recent post "jewels: small window medium duty cabs"

That is the basis of where i got the idea to make a megapickup tandem axle pickup.

Would there be a demand/would you personally buy it if:

a) i could make it look decent like new----not scuffed, rusted used up like in the other pictures. Also, not "garage built." Technically, it WILL be built in a garage, but it won't look like it was built in a garage.

b) could offer financing---maybe 7% with payments of $450 a month or something?

What i'm basically trying to accertain here is if there is a true desire for these types of trucks or is it just a fantasy; For instance i would love to have a spacecraft capable of taking me to other worlds, but that's not realistic.

Also, i, personally actually have no desire to own this type of truck or really anything more than one ton because the 1/2 suits my needs.

I don't see there being a real demand for them. Yeah they're cool, and if I won the lotter and had stupid money I would probably own one, but other than that I don't think there is much of a market for one. Especially in the 24K price range. That limits your client list down quite a bit. Like Mike said talk to the guy that built it. He has done a few of them, but not a lot.
