Nice day for some pics

Hey guys, finally finished color sanding the paint on the truck. So for now, it is finished. It was a wonderful day, so I decided to take some pics. Trevor

Here's what we started with about this time last year.

that looks great man...one question...did you buy the aluminum overlay on the gauge bezel from a company online, or did you get a NOS bezel...that thing looks really good

Re: Nice day for some pics

Actually, I restored the inside trim by a couple of ways.
The instrument panel had some white spots on it like most do and when trying to clean it, it rubbed off the aluminum look. So I just used some Steel Wool and some soap on the overlay and it took it down to the white plastic. I then pryed off the instrument faux aluminum overlay from the bezel. Once it was cleaned off, I sprayed black plastic paint over the white plastic overlay, and then airbrushed Alclad Chrome paint over the black paint. Then I once again used Steel Wool rubbed in a straight path to recreate the look of the brushed aluminum.

For the door aluminum trim, I used wd40 and an old credit card (going slow) and was able to peel off the trim. From there, I sanded it smooth and then used like 220 grit in a one way motion to recreate the brushed look and Clearcoated them. Then reattached them with contact cement. Trevor

that is awesome...this is a great way of doing this...I think I'll do this on my truck also...you can buy the inlay online for $40, but this would be alot cheaper to do...thanks for the tips...one other question...can you get the alclad chrome in a rattle can, or does it only come in a can...I have an airbrush if necessary, just wondering...and also, where did you get it from...thanks man

Re: Nice day for some pics

I don't think you can get alclad in rattle can. You can get spaz-stix chrome rattle can that is actually a little more chrome looking to me. Airbrushing alclad in mist coats over black can get you really close to Sterling silver/polished aluminum looking results. I got mine from a hobby store a year or so ago when I was up at college. You can find it online though for a lot cheaper, or like I said, look up spaz stix. Trevor

Re: Nice day for some pics

For the instrument panel overlay.... word of caution... just take your time. I just used an old credit card and stuck the bezel under warm running water in our shower. I would just shimmy the credit card under the overlay very slowly, to break loose the contact cement. Just use extreme caution around the hvac control cutouts. Trevor

Re: Nice day for some pics

Umm, haha....
a good way to fix any broken aluminum door trim pieces that have broken tabs in the back that attach to the door panel... . .
use the credit card routine with wd40, which really takes some time and makes your fingers sore, but saves you a lot of money.
Once you get the aluminum piece off of the plastic. You can take the plastic molding off of the door panel and drill out a hole centered where the old broken tab was. Use a counter sink bit and counter sink the hole just enough for a flat headed bolt to sit flush with the plastic that the aluminum will rest on. Put the molding back onto the door panel, and get it sitting where you want it. Then apply contact cement to both the plastic and the back side of the aluminum piece (after they have both been cleaned of course of old contact cement) and really cover the head up good with contact cement so it stays put. If your aluminum trim got a little bent up taking it off, you can bend it and sand it back smooth, and then do the trick I talked about earlier on it.
Let both pieces air dry for about 30 min. - 45 min. then line up and stick together= permanent fix that looks good and saves money and parts. Trevor

Hey Patriot, my cpu's hard drive crashed awhile back where I had some pics of it, and it's down at a local shop getting tuned up. Here is a pic of it from down at the shop waiting it's turn over winter. Trevor
