cheap sound deadener?

hello all...

before i put a headliner in my suburban, i want to do some kind of mild sound insulation on the ceiling panels. looking at dynamat prices it looks like it will cost like $300 to do that. i don't want to spend that kind of money. is there an alternative from a different source that would work. i'd go with a spray on kit but that would require a lot of masking off and be hard to remove if i needed to get to the sheet metal for whatever reason. as for headliner, i will probably go with stuff from lowe's or home depot for that more factory look like some others have done.

This is the stuff that I am planning on using. The thinnest one they sell is 1MM thick, this would be perfect for your headliner. It's considerably less expensive than dynamat.

i live here in indiana and there is a company in markleville In. that makes a type of insulation for heat called REFLECTIX
I have friends who work there so i have gotten some end scrap cuttoff pieces
and have used for some different sound deadener and it is cheap and easy to work with
probably on the internet and have seen it at menards
it does a pretty good job for no thicker than it is

peel and seal from a roofing supply place you get a huge roll and use heat guns to apply it

Roofing material and sound deadening material is different.

DON'T expect good results with that stuff, plus it stinks forever!

I used it on a restoration of my wife's 66 Mustang. We used it on the floors, and roof, along with the rear pillars. When we role up the windows you can have a conversation without raising your voice. We also drove it in 80 to 100 degree weather and it helped keep the heat down in the car, much better than before. It comes with a roller (for applying it), a knife, instructions, and 100 sq. ft. (two roles) of Sound Deadener for $125.00. I have another 100 sq. ft. ready for my stepside to help with the noise. Make sure you use the roller or your hand will look like a smurf's hand.

i think the fatman ebay deal sounds good. i liked the second skin, but this is more square footage for an extra 5 bucks and no shipping. i guess i will probably go that route.....

judging by those prices, it will cost me at least $200 to do the entire roof in my truck. i'd rather buy 100 sq foot for cheaper and have plenty left over for behind the side panels, etc, provided the products are comparable in performance.

You have spoken wisely...some material have been designed for cars and trucks while others are not.

The fatmat stands up to dynamat. I used to install custom stereo systems.
Now I just do it as a hobby, the fatmat is really good quality sound deadener!

I have put Fatmat into at least 20 cars and trucks.... with no problems, and nothing but compliments!

I just went threw this and ended up getting second skin damplifier for mine. 80 sq ft for ~$200.

It's not the cheapest, but didn't want to have to redo it if I wasn't satisfied.

capev86, 100 square feet should do your whole roof, plus have left over for the floor boards. When we installed it in my wife's Mustang, we did the whole inside, floor, roof, under dash, firewall, rear fender wells, inside of rear door panels, back seat/trunk divider, plus the metal bracing behind the seat, and still have some left over. You would be surprised how for 100 sq ft will go. It's worth it to sound deaden your truck even if it runs you a little bit more than you anticipated. Fatmat or whatever brand you use is a very cheap investment.

I've been putting this project off for a while but finally ordered some fatmat a couple weeks ago. I've only done the passenger door so far but it made a pretty big difference already. While 130 bucks wasn't "cheap", I feel that it was worth it for the price. My truck doesn't have a floor covering other than a rubber mat and no headliner. I haven't decided on whether I'm going to fatmat the floor and cover it with a floor kit of some sort or just do line-x on the floor. Probably the latter and I'll use leftover fatmat on another vehicle.
