Re: What's the fastest speed you have ever gone?
I don't know.
It was back in 66', riding in Mark Downing's AC Cobra on PCH. He had a F*%d dealership in HB at the time and being friends with my dad, who'd just ordered a Shelby GT-350, he got Mark to give me a spin in his Side-Oiler. I have no idea how fast we went, but when I last looked at the speedo as he was shifting out of 3rd - it was over 120. When we got back to Beach (called Hwy 39 back then) & Main my dad was laughing his a$$ off, because his 15 year old son had that 'Oh S&@t!' look on his face. Mark's dog was awful nice about it too.....

Re: What's the fastest speed you have ever gone?
196, on my old 2000 Suzuki GSX1300R Hayabusa. Never again.
EDIT: I guess I should name a CAR too. I had a 96 LT4 Corvette, bone stock. Took that to 162 running a 300zx TT once.

Re: What's the fastest speed you have ever gone?
This is a fun thread-
Got to go 160 between stop signs riding in a red Lamborghini Countach about 25 years ago - driver said he drove like that a lot - the cops knew he could afford the tickets. As a youngster in the Air Force, I was a jet mechanic (glorified gas pump jockey and tire changer, more like) and I got to ride in the back seat of an F-105G Thunderchief over the CA desert for an hour - twisted 270 degrees and down for a simulated bomb run at about 400mph and pulled 1.7 g's - that's a rush (the wiseass pilot actually said "usually we go a lot faster and lower…"). I did NOT fill the barf bag, but came close. |

Re: What's the fastest speed you have ever gone?
When stationed at Ramstein AFB, Germany, my buddy and I took another friends VW Curato to over 120 MPH on the Autobahn.
In the states, I took my 79 Mercury Capri to 105 MPH racing a friend in his 72 Nova. I was pegged on the Speedo, but had more to give. Buddy told me that was was what his speedo was reading. That was plenty fast for that car. I broke my water pump. That sucked.

About 135 in the Mojave desert in 1968 -- had the '65 Corvette redlined at 6500 rpm.

Re: What's the fastest speed you have ever gone?
70 mph. What? That's the speed limit!
Well, I'm glad to see there are some other VWs mentioned here. In my old V6/5speed Passat I would get up to 110+ every so often...the speed wasn't impressive, but the calmness of it...like Russ said, if felt like it could have gone all the way to California like that. Oh, and by the way, you airplane guys win!

Re: What's the fastest speed you have ever gone?
183 mph in a 1/4 mile in a 21 foot pickle fork drag boat with a blown big block chev in 1977. Had to quit racing due to high laundry bill.
In a car 122 mph in a 1/4 in my 56 chev.

Another board I frequent had a similar thread. Everyone was offering their stories until one guy stepped up with some crazy number that put everyone else in awe. Turns out the guy is literally an astronaut and flies the space shuttle. He won the contest by a wide margin.

Re: What's the fastest speed you have ever gone?
not many domestic cars mentioned so I might as well throw mine in. 1991 I built a 406 for my 77 Impala with a 2.14:1 gear. after 3 TH350s went south I swapped in a Saginaw 4 speed. ~75 MPH in 1st gear.
I got clocked at 163 by the local PD and I was in the bottom of 4th. in 1999 I had my 80 K20 up to a calculated 140 on Il's Tri-State Tollway. 2 weeks ago I had my 89 Civic up to 78. do you all see the progression here? |

Re: What's the fastest speed you have ever gone?
138 mph.
It was when the IROC Z28 first came out; there was one sitting at work so me and another guy snuck off with it and went out to the test track. Made a blast in one direction and got up around 135 or so (I think). We were putzing back in the other direction and thought "heck, may as well go for it". Actually hit the higher 138 on the way back, even with the shorter run! What's funny is that is faster than my race car (which goes 10 flat, 136 mph in the quarter). K

Re: What's the fastest speed you have ever gone?
I went 191 on my hayabusa with the gps on board since we know that speedometers are way off specially at high speeds. I did this on a 30 mile an hour roll to 9/10ths of a mile it is kind of racing we do in south florida.

took my '00 LS1 Camaro up to about 120 once or twice. Was passenger in a '78 Z28 that buried the 130mph speedo back in the 80s.
I'm not big on going really fast. The idea of going to jail sucks. |

Re: What's the fastest speed you have ever gone?
I'm not much of a speed demon.
120 in WS6 TA and it had A LOT more left, but it wasn't my car. 98 in my Z71 (fuel cut off) 100+ in the 67, just to see if she could bust 100. I don't think I've ever had my S-10 past 77/78 mph

Re: What's the fastest speed you have ever gone?
My camaro usually runs between 135-140 in the 1/4, that's as fast as I've been on 4 wheels. I took my old sport bike to ~150 once, but when I peeked down at the pavement and there weren't breaks between the painted lines anymore.....that was fast enough. Never did that again.

Re: What's the fastest speed you have ever gone?
Fastest I ever went in a car was 150mph in my wife's 99 Trans Am. On a bike was 185mph on a ZX10R. I would do 145mph on the back tire on that bike. It was crazy and scary and fun at the same time....mostly crazy. I don;t know how I kept from killing myself on that bike. I have a baby now and sold the bikes and have calmed down a lot.

Re: What's the fastest speed you have ever gone?
About 163 in the passenger seat of a Nascar stocker at Charlotte Motor Speedway, inches off the wall, on one of those (3 lap) rides you can pay for.
Over 155 or so (speedo stopped at 145), in my IROC -Z playing with a new Vette on some freeway in Pennsylvania, 2001 or so. Nowadays I ride at the limit or under.
