how do i get the radio out

fellas, i know this is crazy. but i have an old radio in my 85 gmc. i want to put in my jvc. i looked behind the dash and it appears too cramped to remove. i know someone got the damn thing in there. but there seems to be a big piece of plastic under the radio, further complicating the matter. is there an easier way?

remove the instrument panel trim plate and lower cover
remove the brace screw at the radio back
remove the two nuts on the radio knobs found behind the knobs
pull out to the rear of the dashboard and make sure ya disconnect ( pull out ) the antenna cable and unplug the wiring harness pieces to it
very simple

If you have air conditioning, you might remove the long vent pipe that runs under the dash.

thanks guys, but what is that plastic thing under it? seems like its hollow. hell if that wasnt there i could just drop the dam thing out. its hard to believe how bad a cheap radio can make these fine trucks look.

That's the air duct for the AC. To take this out you need to take out the bottom dash plate under the steering column and the plastic cover under the steering column as well. This will give you plenty of room and will also take out the screws that hold this up under the dash. You will need to move it to the passenger side a bit to clear the parking brake handle and arm on the driver side.

I think you have to unscrew the far left vent in order to remove the long air duct. You should put it back even though your A/C doesn't work, the fresh air will still come out of it in the vent position.
