67 w/ 283 running rough
So I have recently acquired a 67 swb 4x4 w/ the orig 283. We have had it in storage for a couple years and the fuel had stabil in it. Every time we have started it while in storage all I had to do was pull the choke, pump the gas once and she fired right up and purred like a kitten. Well, when I went to grab it and bring it down here in CT I drove it maybe 30 feet and she started running like crap. I got her home and she is still running horrible, spitting, popping, acting like she is way rich, and sputtering really bad to the point of not being able to keep it running really. Like I said before this she ran and purred like a kitten, the entire drivetrain was rebuilt right before I got it (less than 1500 miles ago) I have replaced plugs, wires, cap, rotor, rebuilt the rochester 2 bbl, along with fresh gas and still the same thing. I have 12v on each side of the coil when power is applied could it be bad internally? What ever is causing this came along very suddenly? Any ideas, thanks in advance

That is one thing at I did not check when I pulled the carb apart, would the level "change" that quickly? I mean she went form running mint to running like she is now in about 20'

If I put the brass fuel filter back in the carb the wrong way would hat cause an issue? I can not remember which way it was put in

many things can cause this but start with the simple things. like you said it was running fine. my first thought would be fuel that sat a couple of years. how did you change it? did you drain the tank or just add fuel? you could get a container of fresh gas and run a hose right to the fuel pump. that would eliminate the fuel,tank, sock filter, and lines.

The gas was only about 18 mos old with stabil in it and had been running just fine till the "moment" There was not very much of it ie: less than an 1/8th of a tank, I filled it to the top with fresh and put some startron in it. I will try the gas can approach this afternoon.

This is pure frustration now, Everything in the carb looks good as far as float level and such, I doubled checked the new fuel filter and that is in right, I believe my ign coil is internally resisted, but I can not read what it says on the side, but I am getting 12v and each post when she is turned on so that should be it is not ext regulated right? Man I am getting pissed, sorry guys for the rant but she was running so friggin smooth until this. Rant off...back in the garage I go

Yeah, I do not know why I did not swap those out when I tool the cap and rotor off, I think HEI is going in to be honest that is why I did not, they looked good and the point gap was right so I left them...I know dumb. I think I screwed something up in the carb now when I put it back together. I need to take it apart again and make sure everything is as it should be, I dont seem to be getting much gas at all out of the jets when I pump it by hand.

again, start with the easy stuff.pulling the carb apart can just cause more problems. gas over a year old is bad.could be clogged anywhere in system. did you try gas from can so you can eliminate tank,sock filter,lines? stick a screwdriver in plug wire hold it close to sparkplug while someone cranks engine. if you get a big arc you can eliminate points,condenser,wires,cap, coil. if it was running good before, gas seems like best guess.

We made some progress!!!! I said screw it and now there is a brand new MSD HEI dizzy under the hood, with new HEI 8mm wires. So I installed those, threw a new set of R45's in and put a hose to gas tank with fresh gas and turned the key and Wallllaaaa we had a smooth running truck back...............then she died. Now I have no fuel coming out of the jets in the carb (after about 15 mins of idling and getting the dizzy adjusted right) I checked the line to make sure it was not stuck on the bottom of the gas tank, and the tank is full. So what say you guys, it is a freshly rebuilt carb and she was running perfect again for a few minutes...maybe pump? There really is not anything else is there?

Easy enough to check the pump to see. Take the line loose at the carb and place it in a can or bottle and have someone turn the engine over and see if it's pumping gas or not. Pull your oil dipstick and see if it smells strong of gas. Sometimes when the pump fails gas goes into the crankcase.

Thanks BOOG, will check tonight. If the gas is getting to the crank case shouldn't I see some fuel going into the carb at all?

Make sure the vent is open on the gas can. I used a marine gas can to run a Blazer one time and had that problem.

the way I have it set up right now is the can is on the ground, cap off, fuel line going into the opening. this is just a temp setup for t/s purposes. I am going to take the hard line from the pump to carb off today and see if that has anything built up oin it. If not then I would say I have a bad pump..either way it seems like an easy and cheap fix.

Well problem solved, I had a crack in my fuel line going to the pump, not sure why it was not leaking, but I think it was sucking in some air. Either way i replaced that line and she is running mint again! Thanks guys
