Who can document the right Grille for a 1970 GMC

Need help... trying to figure out which is the correct grille for a 1970 GMC 1500

I think it is the grill with just black paint around the headlights... the one with paint on the center section is for a 71 and later...

Can anyone help me sort it out...

I would appreciate it..

Vic

From what I have seen on other trucks, catalogs and web sites it would make me say you are correct

If you have a small monitor like I do then the one on the top is 71/72 and the one on the bottom is 69/70.

On my 69 the one on the right is what is in mine. I know the original owner and he claimed the truck was never damage or had any parts replaced, and when I got it it truely looked originally correct. just my 2 cents worth. Gary

Re: Who can document the right Grille for a 1970 GMC

GMCs had 3 different grills from 67-72. The 67 only had GMC letters stamped in the middle, 68-70 were the same with the 68 having different perimeter trim than 69 and 70, 71 and 72 had some different lines with the chrome ones being painted black over approximately half of the grill.

Re: Who can document the right Grille for a 1970 GMC

Again, while i'm a chevy person first and foremost and always will be, i have to admit that i think GMC had the better, much better, front end styling from 67-72.

What i'm trying to ASSertain is i noticed that some of these gmc grills were painted (mostly white?) while some were chromed.

What was the rhyme and reason on this? What is the official "scoop" on this?

In my opinion, the chrome does not nessesarily look better than the painted----for me.

I got my paint years mixed up. The 70 Chevy headlite bezels are painted and I thought GMC grille paint theme were similiar. It looks not. So... GMC used the painted theme 71 -72 while Chevy used the painted headlite bezel theme 69-70 (70 for sure but not exactly sure about 69) and in the years 71-72 they used the brite aluminum look. That's my story and I'm sticking with it.

Re: Who can document the right Grille for a 1970 GMC

The 71-72 grill is painted black through the middle bar and on either side of this black section the metal is raised slightly its also painted black across the bottom & top lip and around the area the headlight bezels attach at. The 68-70 only has black paint around the headlight bezel area. You can tell a 71-72 from a 68-70 even if all black paint has been removed by the raised up metal on either side of the middle bar where the black paint was originally and the 68-70 does not have this raised up metal on the middle bar of the grille.

Can I be a Thread Whore here and go 1 further in asking.....

Can the "All Chrome Grill" from the 70 GMC be mounted on the front of a 72 GMC??

I have asked this questio before and my research has turned up nothing.
I'm not concerned in the "Corectbess" of the time period, I just like the Chrome Grill SO MUCH MORE than the painted.
I'd take the Flat Black paint off mine but it wouyld still be dented.

Apologies to Vic for "Whoring your post" , but I thought it was relevant.

Re: Who can document the right Grille for a 1970 GMC

You can install any 1967, 1968-70 & 1971-72 GMC grille in any 67-72 GMC truck.
If you use a 67-68 style hood on a 67-72 GMC truck you can use any of the 3 grills available and you eliminate using your fender eyebrows on the 69-72's and you need to use a 67-68 grill top bar and 67-68 hood latching mechanism and 67-68 grille center / hood latching brace.
If you use a 69-72 style hood on a 67-72 GMC truck you can use any of the 3 grills available but you need to use a 69-72 grill top bar and use 69-72 GMC fender eyebrows along with a 69-72 hood latching mechanism and 69-72 grille center / hood latching brace.
You can change the hood on any GMC to a 67-68 style or a 69-72 style without having to change the fenders.
If you want to use 67-68 style hoods on a 69-72 GMC get the 67-68 hood, grill top bar for a 67-68, hood latching mechanism & center grill hood latching brace and fill the holes where your fender eyebrows installed.
and to install a 69-72 hood on a 67-68 GMC get the 69-72 top bar, 69-72 fender eyebrows ( to install eyebrows you'll need to make 3 3/16" holes in the front edge of each fender), 69-72 hood latch mechanism & 69-72 center grill hood latching brace.
