Axle and wheel fell out of Dana 60

What is your guess on how bad off it is? This is on my 69 1/2 ton coil sprung truck.

Re: Axel and wheel fell out of Dana 60

Probably broke the tip of the axle off where the c clip goes. Probably not good for the internals.

I for got to mention the axel/wheel area was smoking like crazy and the azel is scored badly near the end closest the wheel.

These aren't C-clip axles, so I am ASSuming the retainer bearing cooked.

If you want, I will gladly come by and get rid of that "problem" axle for you, free of charge!

Re: Axel and wheel fell out of Dana 60

Been there, done that. The ear on the lock washer sheared off and allowed the retainer nut to back off. The axle and wheel walked out about 10" in a low-speed corner. The wife said she'd never seen me turn that white before.

The only damage was to the threads on the end of the axle tube. Took awhile to find someone with an adjustable die that big.

With your smoke and the scoring, I'd second the failed bearing diagnosis.

Re: Axel and wheel fell out of Dana 60

It came apart in the middle near the gears while I was towing the truck so no damage to the truck. We slid the axel and wheel back on after we jacked the truck up then winched it on a trailer. I have another 6 lug rear but wondered how much it might cost to fix this rear end or how much could the rearend be worth in this condition?

Re: Axel and wheel fell out of Dana 60

You may not be in too much trouble as long as any bearing surfaces have not been scored. On a 67 Dodge 3/4 ton with a heavy duty rear I once had one or more bent ears on a retaining ring fail and the axle assembly just unscrewed going around a corner - knew nothing until I lost push while turning and happened to look in the side view mirror and saw the wheel/tire out about 12 inches from the truck and a very bendy axle shaft still running into the housing. Managed to steer the other direction and the wheel/axle moved back almost into place. Stopped, jacked er up, screwed everything back into place as best I could on the spot, put the retaining ring back in place and locked by bending a couple of the remaining ears.

Next day got a new ring, took it all apart to check everything, found no visible damage to bearing or shaft surfaces, put it all together correctly and installed the new lock ring - then drove the truck another 50,000 mi. with no issues.

Carefully check the bearing surfaces before you proceed with any fixes.

The OP said he has a Dana 60. These are full-floating (except on a few Mopar CARS) and I am scratching my head trying to figure out how he got one on a C-10.

There are a few out there. I think they may have been special order. Someone else is looking for one for a half ton in the parts for sale section. I will try to post some pics of the damage to the axel this evening.

These trucks are frequently hodge-podges by the time we get them anyway.

I have a 68 C-20 with a 350 and a HO72 rear. I don't think you'll find a build sheet listing that particular combo. lol

Re: Axle and wheel fell out of Dana 60

Hounddog and CCCC, you are talking about full-floating 3/4 ton rear axles and BB72Chevy has a 6 lug, 1/2 ton axle. In all likelyhood if it isn't a 12 bolt, Gm Corporate, then it could be a DANA 44.
Without a picture does it look like one of these. http://coloradok5.com/axleguide.shtml

As raycow said, the only DANA 60's that aren't full-floating are in late 60's Mopars. They were used only with 440 and 426 HEMI's and even then, only if they had 4 speeds.

Re: Axle and wheel fell out of Dana 60

The truck is about as original as it gets even has the original 165k mi motor. I was told it was a Dana 60 by the rear end shop I had service the rearend when I purchased the truck. It was also almost impossible to find a replacement carrier bearing because it was a Dana 60 rearend so I went to a one piece driveshaft.

And in 67-72 Chevy trucks... as semi-floaters in the 1/2 tons.

Re: Axle and wheel fell out of Dana 60

Easy enough to check. It has a "60" cast right into the housing. The top of the "6" is normally almost closed off but it looks like mine has been struck at some time. The second picture is from the web and shows one that doesn't have a leaking gasket like mine. ggg

Re: Axle and wheel fell out of Dana 60

A little more off topic but while I was searching for a HO72 with 5.14's ( needle in a hay stack those 5.14's ) I stumbled across a 1970 and a I think a 71 bolth with dana 60 FF. The trucks were in the normall condition and one was missing a shaft but other wise in good shape.

I spotted them thinking they would have a HO axle and they truned out to be 60's. Any idea what there worth or are they even worth the effort?

Jason.

Depends on what you're going to be doing with your rig. The axle shaft in the FF D60 is the same diameter as a 12 bolt. Of course, the big difference between the two is that the Dana is a full floating axle and the load isn't directly on the axleshafts.

Here are some pics of what it looks like and proof that it is indeed a Dana 60 from the factory.

I was just asking for anyone that was looking for one. I run a 14 bolt and now I'm building a HO72.

Re: Axle and wheel fell out of Dana 60

I had that happen on a 79 CJ5. May have been a Dana 60, not sure though. The reason why my axel came out though was because the previous owner replaced the bearings but never had the bearing retainers pressed back on.

I was doing about 50mph when I felt the right rear drop down. I came real close to rolling the damn thing. lol The weird thing was, when I finally got it stopped in somones front yard, the tire was back under the wheel well and the axel was laying on the leaf spring. I was really lucky.
