What's the difference between the 5k and 8k OEM tachometers?

I have a NOS Tach dash I just installed in my 69 burb and it's acting weird. The indicator on the Tach gets stuck sometimes and is not that accurate above 1k. It wont even go past 2500RPM's. It's one of the 5k versions and I am wondering if it's an issue with the Tach or do I have one that was made for 6cyl engines? My burb has a 396.

Thanks,
Steve

Re: What's the difference between the 5k and 8k OEM tachometers?

There aren't such things as 8K OEM tachs for our trucks. There are custom made camaro tach dashes, or Cheyenne SuperMan's 8k factory looking tach dashes. Trevor

LMC is now offering and 8000 rpm tach dash for our trucks. Don't know who makes it though.

Hi Trevor,

Thanks for the quick reply. Not to be argumentative but I see that Southern Kentucky sells an 8k Tach. Not sure if that is just aftermarket though.

Re: What's the difference between the 5k and 8k OEM tachometers?

No problem, I didn't know that others started selling them. Gary Terry (Cheyenne SuperMan) was the one who first started carrying them back in 2006 or 2007. Trevor

They aren't stock though. Only 5K tachs were made 6 cyl and 8 cyl. They are different calibrated tachs, but they both redline at 5k. Trevor

Re: What's the difference between the 5k and 8k OEM tachometers?

Trevor,
Any way to tell what I have (6cyl or 8cyl)? All I know is that the dash was supposed to be NOS. The lack of grease and presence of patina lends me to believe this to be true. The person I got it from does not know if it's for a 6cyl or 8cyl. I guess either way I have to replace the Tach.

Thanks,
Steve

Re: What's the difference between the 5k and 8k OEM tachometers?

Normally, the tach head has an ink print on the back side of it that states whether or not it is for a 6 cyl or 8 cyl. With being NOS, it may not state. Trevor

Re: What's the difference between the 5k and 8k OEM tachometers?

I did not see anything on the rear of the bezel stating it was. I only saw "Coil" and "12v". I have not pulled the gauge out of the cluster though.

Re: What's the difference between the 5k and 8k OEM tachometers?

I don't think it will tell you anything after you pull it out, you might try and look for a part number or sticker on the back of the gauge face that might have a number on it. Different numbers between 6 and 8 cyl. Other than that, ther is not much you can do for knowing if it's for a 6 or 8 cyl. Trevor
