Bed angle strips: Steel or Stainless?

I have to replace the bed angle strips on my 68 Stepper. I will get stainless for the strips, but I need to decide whether to use Stainless of plain steel for the angle strips. If I use steel, then they will be painted and the rest of the strips will be polished. I like the look of stainless but then there is the problem of how to mount them. I you weld them, then you have the problem of discoloration and a good chance of ruining them. If you bolt them through the bedsides, then there's the problem of the nuts and washers protruding on the outside.
I had the idea to weld in a steel angle iron with the vertical part pointing down, and then capping that with a stainless angle strip that is not mechanically fastened to the bedsides.
Here is the initial mock-up.

Anyone else tried this?
Any problems? other than having to rabbet a step into the first board on the edge?

Re: Bed angle strips: Steel or Stainless?

Here is the final solution. BTW, you can't put this strip below the boards since there is no metal to weld to in the middle part.

Re: Bed angle strips: Steel or Stainless?

I would try to drill holes where they go, then plug weld them from the outside of the bed, then re-polish the stainless from the discoloration, after you grind the welds. If you get the heat and wirespeed right, there wont be much to grind. Just dont burn through. I have some spare stainless pieces from when I cut tubs in my stepside that I would be willing to send you for shipping cost. That way you could practice on something first to get it right.Let me know if you need them. Good luck!
