Re: best gm crate motor 87 octane
Original equipped survivors are becoming more rare, so if you go with a different engine/tranny combo, I would set the 283/Powerglide aside for use at a later date or if you sell it.
I have heard a lot of good things about the 290 hp GM crate 350 sbc. It is not the best at anything, but overall a good fit in every catagory. |

Re: best gm crate motor 87 octane
we put the 350/290HP with a turbo 350 behind it,edlbrock "air gap" intake and a store bought (kragen) headders it put's out right at 300 HP 500 cfm 4 bbl and a serpintine system, and it ALL works great, very dependable,....and runs good on high grade pump gas.

Re: best gm crate motor 87 octane
That is a great engine for the money!!!!!!!
I put one (changed the heads to a 64 cc chamber to get more compression) in a '73 Vega wagon and went 11:30's out of the box on the motor only.... for almost 3 years! I don't think you can go wrong with this choice and being that it is a new engine you will be able to rebuild it years from now and not have to worry about it already being bored out. Do it! |

Re: best gm crate motor 87 octane
sir - very handsome looking bay... thanks for the pic... do the 350/290's run on 87 octane ?
i thought they did. that 572 is just toooooo.... huge, in all respects. really just something equivalent to the 283 but with just a little extra getupandgo will do. yea... 200r sounds good. are those 200r's straight and easy bolt ups ? thanks |

Re: best gm crate motor 87 octane
If it is an original truck, I would be torn on putting in a different motor. I would rebuild.
However, my truck isnt even close to an original survivor type, so I went with a 4.8/4l60e and I am very happy.

Re: best gm crate motor 87 octane
How does it do on 87 octane? And what kind of gas mileage can you expect out of a set up like this?

Re: best gm crate motor 87 octane
You`ve got to play with the timing a little but overall it does really well, mine was bought in `95 although mine is a vortec motor, its still the 290 hp vareity, with a quadrajet, turbo 350, 373 posi, gets approx 17/18 highway, mine has shift kit in it, still hard to keep my foot out of it in town.

Re: best gm crate motor 87 octane
Aboz,
not sure if your asking me or Sir but, I get about 13 in the city, about 17.5 on highway, I need to get a retune on the PCM so the MPG should improve when that is completed.

Re: best gm crate motor 87 octane
I just got a Blueprint 383 longblock from Summit Racing. They are remanufactured blocks but everything else is brand new. According to the dyno sheet that came with it, it has 405 hp and 430+ tq and I got it on sale for $2,965. They also have 355 long and short blocks and "Budget Stompers" which are cheaper, less powerful engines.
