Re: Best turbo

a friend built a 302 and used a single HX35 with a 14" exhaust housing from a 5.9 cummins. It ran high 11's.

But how do you plan to tune this?

How deep are your pockets? Are you talking new turbo or one from a used vehicle?

Re: Best turbo

HX35 is a decent size turbo... just watch out. That thing will put out 30+psi without a problem. Most gas motors wont even come close to holding that.

HX35 can be picked up cheap though. If you are looking to use a diesel motor, also check out the HE341s off a 03-04 Cummins.

Re: Best turbo

There is a funny post on the main forum about what BS people say when trying to sell their vehicles. I think the biggest thing with a used turbo is if it really is what they say (condition wise) or if it will need to be completely rebuilt.

Re: Best turbo

OK -save some money and buy a new Precision turbo. Speak to a shop that deals with this stuff and tell them exactly what you want. Junkyard specials are great, but you can get a bran-new 76mm Precision for like $1100.00 (even cheaper if you look around)

No t3's, minimum one or two t4's or a t6 if you go BIG power 91mm +

I's not like bolting on a blower. A properly sized turbo (with a propely set up engine etc..) will spool quickly and not choke on the top end. I'm not talking race stuff though - that's completely different.

Good luck.

Spool quickly, probably, and choke the motor at 4000rpm if you only use one. If its just to fool around then try it. certainly if you just plan on using a stock 350.

I bet you could get properly sized Precision or Turbonetics to spool just as quick and hit a hell of a lot harder and have a nice top end - and it would easily walk a 500hp 454!

Re: Best turbo

Best bang for the buck would be a Master Power T76 for a stock type 350, but would suck on a 454. In order to properly size the turbo you need your horsepower goals then calculate how much air you need and look at a compressor map.
Putting a custom turbo kit together isn't all that easy, but if you do your research it wont be that hard. I have been assembling all of my parts for about 8 months now and I am almost finished with mine. I have watched for deals and bought new stuff from other forums (new parts that guys have sitting around because they changed their mind). I still have about $2500+ into my setup, that includes a $400 S475 and I am doing all the work myself.
Don't forget to upgrade your fuel system.

I think you should read Maximum Boost by Corky Bell before you go buying a turbo. Not to insult you or anything but your knowledge of turbos sounds very very limited.

Re: Best turbo

^

agreed, don't take it as an insult. Turbos require a bit more research - the outcome of a well designed system is well worth the effort!

you don't want to be the guy selling his stuff for dirt cheap because you bought the wrong thing...you want to be the guy buying the stuff that's dirt cheap from the guy that bought the wrong thing...lol

Re: Best turbo

i agree with Wild and Alex.
just to slap somethin together and hope it works is a major shot in the dark with a turbo setup. do your research and read read and read some more . turboforums.com is an over flowing website of turbo info. you name it , its prolly there. alot of guys went thru alot of trial and error to come up with some good info and to help new comers from makin $$ pricey mistakes.

soooo if your serious about goin TURBO , do your research. read !!! and us the search button. they even have a newbie section and a chevy section. if ya just wanna slap a turbo on quick and make big power , forget it if your not knowlegdable about turbo systems and how they work.

just wanna go a different route on this truck, want to see how much boost I can get on a stock 350 before I build the truck now I am working on collecting all my parts for the body new doors, cab corners, new dash, carpet and so on....I am a body man by trade yeah i know enough to get me by when it comes to motor wise, but im new to boost

Re: Best turbo

Read through this thread. Guy ran 9.30s at 150 with a stock junkyard 350. If the tune is right you will blow up the tranny or rear before the engine goes. I have seen a few cars/trucks run 9s with a stock 350 block and a turbo (BW S480 to be specific). It's all in the tune though.

Read through theturboforums for a ton of good info.

Re: Best turbo

not sure how he is going to tune the 350TBI, it can be done but it not fun.
but getting the correct turbo on it will mean alot more than just picking one and hoping it works.
