Header heat making my oil filter glue to the block?

I changed the oil again today on my 69. It was all i could do to get the oil filter off. I don't think i'm putting it on too hard, I have 2 other trucks i drive and have no problems getting them off, but on my 69 I have a set of headers that run fairly close to the filter. Could those be making my filter glue itsself to the block?

I'm running headers and did have that problem. But I use synthetic and don't drive my truck everyday. So I only change the oil once a year in the spring. 7 quarts of full synthetic gets rather expensive.

a friend of mine made a heat shield for his to cover the starter and oil filter.. he used hose clamps to mount them to headers

maybe some thing to think about and try, might work

mine does that. i have to use filter pliers to get it off. if looks like channel locks with big teeth. they will crush and pierce a filter no problem. but they sure do make it easy to get off.

I've got a 6 quart pan with kickouts on the side, plus the headers so its kind of difficult to get to. I don't even run the truck that long, I just start it up for a few minutes, let it heat up and let the fans coolit down through a couple of cycles and shut it off. Maybe its just the tendancy of the oil filter strap thing I have to crush the filter while your taking it off. I'll try using this strap on my S-10 and see if I get the same results.

My question would be was the oil filter gasket lubed before the install....?

Just a thin coat of oil on the rubber gasket will make a big difference......and don't over tighten..

yeah, i always put oil on the gaskets and fill up the filter as much as possible with oil. I've got 2 other trucks I change oil in and never have this problem.

I had the same problem on my 69, the headers come very close to the filter and hardly any room for a filter wrench, I went to a 2 qt filter [fram ph373], this brings the filter below the headers and I believe keeps the filter cooler.

You could go to a remote filter using a relocation kit. Just my 2 cents

Theres no way in the world I could use that 2 qt. filter. Mine is sitting on the ground. So the long filter would be trouble on my ride. I've thought about using an oil cooler, but the thought of a loose line scares me. I may try to make a heat sheild for it.

It looks like those headers are touching the filter! They are very close.

I think it could easily be causing your problem. It could also cause other problems too, like getting the oil too hot... doing bad things to the element in the filter, etc...

I would definately get a filter relocation kit and move the filter somewhere else.

I used to have a set of full lenght headers on my 350. I never had a problem with the filter sticking. I now have a set of block hugger headers and there is a ton of clearance.

If the oil on the seal is burning off, or cooking the rubber, try using some high temp antisieze instead of oil. Just be sure not to gunk it so that it goes into the oil side.

Blazerman, you need a skid plate just for your oil filter
