Ship came in

Good Evening Truckers. Finally found the one I've been looking for up in NY. Colorful trip home on the ol trailer - lost the keys.... The ORIGINAL keys. 44 years with the truck and I lose them on the first day. I'm a moron. Anyhoo, it's all good now. Truck's in pretty good shape and very original - the whitewalls will be the first to go though - blackwalls, blue steelies and poverty caps are in its future.

Re: Ship came in

thanks geezer. i will admit, i was looking for more of a project truck - but I couldn't pass this one up. decent price and pretty much virgin sheet metal. The seller was a true gentleman trucker too - he threw in the steelies for free and he bailed me out of my lost key disaster. still plenty to do under the hood - and the 3 speed, well, i'm thinkin Tremec. But finding the truck was the hard part. Now I'm broke. So I can polish it until i come up with the do-ray-me.

Re: Ship came in

What's not to like. Beautiful truck. It's going to look great with the matching wheels and caps. Like the bed rails too, never seen a version that stands straight up before, but they sure add character. Full chrome and stainless, bumper guards, very cool indeed.

The bed rails would go if it were mine but it's not. Fantastic truck. What's under the hood?

Old custom classic trucks have soul. Their dashboards aren't plastic, and they've survived both the best and worst of what the 20th century had to offer. For the owners of these trucks, it's often the same story. Through both good and bad times they persevered, until one day they could turn the key and roll up in a customized truck everyone with good taste would admire.Custom Classic Trucks

Wow, that thing is sweet!!
I looked up the eBay listing; 283 engine.
I'm not a big fan of the bed rails either. But, what I think doesn't matter, only you.

Re: Ship came in

Hey, thanks all, much appreciated. Like 63/64 noted, it's got the 283. Appears to be the one it was born with. Trans is a 3 on the tree. Under the dash, it's a "soon-to-be-gone-o-meter". (It's a moon tach - i think i'm gonna make it disappear, or maybe stick my ancient Sun Super II on the column - if I'm too cheap to do the dash tach conversion...). Likaroc is correct - it was on ebay, but I never got a chance to bid, was out - I noticed it didn't sell, so I called the owner and drove up to look at it the next day. I couldn't resist, it really was exactly what I was looking for. Sillyoldman and aerotruck, I'm on the fence about the rails - originally, I figured those would be the next thing to hit garage floor after the whitewalls, but they are kinda growing on me. They are an old defunct brand called "Taco" and are kind of 60's appropriate. I do like Aerotruck's much better - if you notice, his are the shorter version that keep the horizontal bar closer to the top of the bed. Mine stand up like telephone lines. But we'll see. Runs and drives pretty well - I believe the 3 speed will have to go - I THINK there were two 3-speeds available in 66, a non-synchro and a full synchro (but I'm not certain about that). If that's the case, then I'm pretty certain I have the non-synchronized 1st gear version - I pretty much have to come to a stop, make a sandwich and take a phone call before I can downshift back into first. Originally leaning toward a Tremec, but a muncie would be nice and a friend has one he might sell me cheap cheap. Alrighty - thanks again guys. I really enjoy the forum and catching up on the comments. Will share when I start workin on it.

Re: Ship came in

Would that be TEACO, instead of TACO? The interior spotlight brackets have TEACO on them. Are the stantions marked on the outside or did you remove them and find the manufacturing stamp?

Re: Ship came in

Aerotruk - the guy i bought it from said "Taco" was printed on the bottom of the stantions - he'd had several calls on them when he listed the truck on ebay even though it didn't sell. I haven't seen it yet. And since it looks like someone mounted them while the paint was wet - I probably won't be yanking them anytime soon(!) Eventually will need to fill the screw holes and repaint if I remove those things. Cripes. Yep, they're looking better and better all the time (or too much of a pain to yank and paint the aftermath, take your pick). Having blabbered on about all that - they COULD be Teaco, not Taco. That was a whole lot of nothing as far as info... yes, I know.

Re: Ship came in

Wooogeroo,
Here are the exhaust pics you asked for. Tried to take pics that would show how the exh snakes around the sway bar, tire, etc. The flowmasters are mounted vertically and the pipes from there come out of the top outlet - helps with easing the tube bending I think - then it snakes over the axle and immediately under the panhard (on the driver's side). Driver's side is the tightest because of the panhard. Passenger side not much of a problem. Then they come out at a 45 before really getting tangled up with the spare. I'd prefer turndowns that point aft and down - but that's for another day (and dollar).
Hope that helps.

In fact you can attach photos to a PM, it's the same as attaching them to a thread post. I do it all the time. Just might take a bit of practice until you get the hang of it.

markeb01, thanks - can you elaborate - here's my problem: on a thread post, I see the little attachment paper clip that I use to attach stuff. On PMs though, there's no paper clip thingy....
