4l80e questions?

im thinking about swapping a 4l80e into my 68 so i have a few questions about doin this.

1. my truck is a low hump truck so will there be any clearance issues over a stock th-400?

2. what kinda power can i put through this trans stock? the motor i have blue printed should make 428 h.p and 500 tq

3. what kind of trans controlled will i have to use to make the trans work with a carburetor motor?

anything else i should know about these trans will be greatly appriecated bc im trying to decide between and th-700r4 , 200-4r, and a 4l80e

Re: 4l80e questions?

4L80E will handle your motor without issue
Look around out on the market several folks have stand alone controllers for the 4l80e
prices range from 750 - 2000 with no rime or reason in quality and user friendliness from what I can see
You will need a special billet faced converter to convert over to an old style GM motor (no need if you are running a LS motor)
These guys are big heavy and eat a fair amount of HP
700R4 modified will work fine in your application
No electronics to hook up unless you use a switchable lock up converter but easy switch install and low cost
Smaller, weighs less, uses less HP but is fragile when compared to the 4l80E
If you plan on standing on your motor hard a lot lean towards the 4l80e

Re: 4l80e questions?

I wouldnt recommend a 4l80e for performance unless its rebuilt for performance use. In that case it would be just as affordable to get the gear-vendors overdrive. By the time you pay for the trans, a converter, a electronic controller, a adapter plate to hook it up to your old block, and new clutch packs, servos, speedometer converter, upgrade the sungear, new fluid, ect- you can afford an overdrive I would think.

Now if your doing a vortec or LS swap its a no brainer... 4l80e's are great for towing but they suck alot of hp out of your motor... No doubt they are a super strong transmission, and alot of people use them in the performance arena but 90% of the time there behind a computer controled engine or have money to burn... Besides Gearvendors overdrive units can handle what ever you throw a it, and they are just plan cool...

I personally am putting in a 4l80e into my truck but it came with the 7.4l (454) that I bought. Had I not got suck a sweet deal on the entire engine/trans, I would have been going with my old school 396 and th400 and would have bought the overdrive unit. After killing so many transmissions when I used to run super comp and no electronics classes in dragracing, I taught myself how to completly rebuild a th350 or th400 in about 2 or 3 hours. No way I would even try tear open a 4l80e.... no way!!

Re: 4l80e questions?

Tony - have faith in yourself - A 4L80E is a glorified T400 - I would say of you can handle T400 rebuild a 4L80E is just another step up the ladder
