Did they make 3/4 ton shortbeds

Does anyone know if they made 3/4 ton shortbeds? Thinking of buying a decent 3/4 ton longbed truck for $1500 but I really want a shortbed. I thought I could shorten the frame and install a short bed on it down the road.

Re: Did they make 3/4 ton shortbeds

I am thinking about doing that to a 1970 SWB K10.
I prefer a full floater over a 6 lug 12 bolt any day.

Re: Did they make 3/4 ton shortbeds

So a short bed 3/4 ton wouldn't be strange? I suppose I could put a 1/2 ton 5 lug front and rear suspension in it. Are the frames the same?

Re: Did they make 3/4 ton shortbeds

Early Classic Enterprises has done 8-lug to 5-lug conversions, and sell what it takes to make it happen (or they used to).

As far as making a short bed chassis out of a long bed chassis, there's a bunch of those on the road or under construction. Basically, it just means you take 12 inches out of the chassis, between the back of the cab and the rear axle.

Re: Did they make 3/4 ton shortbeds

why do you want to build a 1/2 ton short bed? they made plenty of those. i thought this thread was about a 3/4 ton short bed? if i had a good C20 long bed i'd probably leave it alone, but if was buying a bunch of parts i'd love to put together a SWB C20 just like the factory "would have done it."

Re: Did they make 3/4 ton shortbeds

I know where there's a shortbed that's had the front wheels off for a few years while it sits in the driveway on jackstands. Its not mine, shows no signs of being for sale, and its a bit of a ride from FL. I just wish they'd fix it so I don't have to be sad for it as I drive by on the way to the Lowes/HD...

Re: Did they make 3/4 ton shortbeds

In the early 90's I built a 3/4 ton short bed. Basically, I shortened a '72 lwb 3/4 ton, bolted on a set of 8 lug 16.5" chrome wagon wheels with 31x10.50 tires on all 4 corners. I loved that truck. Sold it to help pay for a move.

Re: Did they make 3/4 ton shortbeds

Not long before I bought my K20 in 1977, I looked at a beautiful powder blue & white private-party '71 or '72 SWB 4x4 with 8-lugs -- I never knew they didn't exist, and it was above my price range anyway. Knowing what I do now, I sometimes wish I would have stretched the budget and bought it.

Save yourself the trouble and buy a truck that suits your needs in the first place. You'll have enough to do with maintainance and repairs without having to hunt down and replace things that you could have bought originally.

Re: Did they make 3/4 ton shortbeds

I just bought a 3/4 ton shortbed 1984 chevy truck. GM did make them, they were special order. Go figure, I looked up the numbers and bam! THey match. IT rides a little stiffer than a 1/2 tom truck but pulls like a 3/4ton.

Re: Did they make 3/4 ton shortbeds

Foxchevy, they did not produce a 3/4 ton Short wheel base in the 67-72 body. But might have been available in the square bodies

And welcome to the board

They did not build 3/4 ton short beds in the '73 - '87 body style either.

x2. I hear people say they did but they are misled. There were no 8-lug shortbed square bodies or 67-72s. There has always been a heavy duty spring option and at some point in the '70s GM started calling 10-series with this option "Heavy Half" and some started calling them 5/8t,still not a 3/4t (nor 5/8t). They never called a 3/4t with HD spring option "Heavy Three Quarters" or 1t...nor 7/8t,for that matter.
I've never known of a 60-66 SWB 3/4t except for 4wd Panels. I have known of SWB 3/4t pickups in the 55-59s. The one my friend had had 8-lug 15" split rims

Re: Did they make 3/4 ton shortbeds

Guy up here did that, shortened the frame and used a 90 stepside bed. It looks really cool with the 8 lug wheels. The cab still has the c20 badges on it.

I had a friend of mine shorten a 3/4 ton for me. It was a 72 with a 402/th400.

I've built a couple of them myself. I kept breaking axle shafts and had a problem stopping the truck until I went with a full floater and 13'' drums.

?? Did you build the frame? that looks like a blazer wheelbase? That is not a factory short wheelbase frame when looking at the pictures...

As for wanting to end up with a 4x4 3/4T shorty, yes, you can do this by either getting a 1/2 4x4 and add 3/4 ton running gear, or getting a 3/4 ton 4x4 long bed and shortening the frame to short bed. Lots of threads here on others that have shorten. Like said before, you have to section the frame in front of and behind the the rear wheels.

good luck in your search, and we will be here to help you along with your project!!

Here are cut sheets for a '67.

C10 shows long and short bed wheelbases:
C20 is only long wheelbase:
