starter flex plate problem?
My truck 71 small block 200r4 has had problems starting since I bought it. It sounds terrible like the starter and flex plate to not match up correctly. I tried to shim the starter but it did not help. The starter looks new, the teeth on the flex plate look pretty good, there is some wear on some of the teeth but nothing major. It has 168 teeth on the flex plate and 9 teeth on the starter. Do I have the wrong starter?

Re: starter flex plate problem?
You might have the flexplate backwards. Also, the bolts need to be the right ones. They must fit the starter holes exactly.

Re: starter flex plate problem?
the flex plate is not backwards and it does have the correct starter bolts.

Re: starter flex plate problem?
I had the same problem on a truck tried three diffrent high torque mini-starters did not work. Put a GM starter on it no problems at all works great!!!!

Re: starter flex plate problem?
Tim, that is EXACTLY what my problem is. I pulled a GM "big & heavy" starter off and installed a high-torque mini....just because they sound very cool.
If the motor takes more than about 3 turn-overs to start, it sounds like it slips off the teeth and grinds like crazy!
