oil pump pickup tube

Ok, I bought a new oil pump for my 350 rebuild project and it came without a pickup tube on it. I ordered that separetly and it arrived today. Does this have to be installed in a press? and tips?

Pick up tube

Figure out exactly where you want it -- the orientation or height, that is. Set the pump on a solid surface, get the tube started, then use an open-end wrench above the collar and drive it in with a hammer by tapping on the flat part of the wrench. I belive on small blocks it is a 5/8 wrench. Welding a very short bead (just a tack, really) will hold it in place if you're worried about it moving or falling off.

Just be cafeful on the heat build up if welding a tack because the spring if heated will lose it's tension and constantly bypass the filter. You could remove the spring, weld the tube in place, let it cool, and then reassemble.

They also make a clamp that goes on the pickup and then bolts to the oil pump, to keep the pickup in place. Jeg's and summit sell them.
