Is this normal???
I'm taking the pulleys off the crank on my 396 because the don't line up w/ each other (water pump and such) and I was quite surprised to find no less than 5 washers (6 if you count the lock washer) on the center balancer bolt! Is this normal, or did some previous owner/mechanic jack things up?!?!
Thanks '69 C20 396

Re: Is this normal???
Everything that I have worked on, has had one large flat washer.

Can't help you, but I find it amusing that I just finished a Fat Tire and then sat down at the computer to check the board.

Re: Is this normal???
Maybe someone was too lazy to go to the store and buy a replacement bolt for the one that they just lost, so they used what they had. Happens all of the time around the farm. lol

Re: Is this normal???
Take the washers off and see if it screws all the way in and can be torqued down. I suspect the threads are stripped deeper inside the bolt hole.

Re: Is this normal???
Yeah, it seemed excessive to me too. The bolt definitely DOES NOT appear to be a GM standard issue bolt. It's a 2.5" long, 1/2" 20 pitch with a 1'' shoulder on it. I think I'll just get a replacement bolt and see what they give me.
It was also barely finger-tight when I got in there!
