Re: vintage license plates...

I've been looking for a nice set of '72 California plates for my burb - So far Ebay has been the best resource in inventory... I just have not found the set I want (not in any hurry). Seems price for the one's I'm looking for can range from $25-100. I've actually found a lot of 1930s, some early 1900's (various states)- which I don't need them, but have been buying some to one day use for a 1930's rat rod build (line the enterior floor, or bed of a truck w the plates).

Re: vintage license plates...

I run them on all the trucks/blazer i have had. In VA, running them is fairly easy. You can choose to either get full time driver status and put stickers and get annual state inspections, or just run it as a cruiser that you can take on small errands and to shows and you don't need a state inspection and no stickers (my choice)

Not running one, but mounted my '69 Arizona plate on the front of my '69. It's in my avatar.

Re: vintage license plates...

Used to run a set on my '69 GTO but gave them away after I got the Street Rod tags. My '69 C-10 stepper came with the original North Carolina farm tags.

There are several online vendors which offer vintage tags. Your best source would probably be a swap meet.

Re: vintage license plates...

I do the same as VA72C10 I run vintage plates that I got from Super Chevy show, paid $40. I have no state inspections on either truck and use as a cruiser, and insurance is dirt cheap. Here in Va. the plates are not to hard to come across.

Re: vintage license plates...

I just registered my vintage plates yesterday. Found them on Ebay. They were unissued 68' Texas truck plates in mint condition. Even had the original packaging tissue advertising Texas prison rodeos. They look great on my truck! I had a hard time finding the correct plates in this condition. Most the 68' plates I found were either beat up or for a passenger car.

Re: vintage license plates...

I have a collection of vintage plates from 1914 all the way up to present day. I live on a farm that has had a Chevy truck since at least 1947, probably the pre-war plates were for a Chevy of some vintage, too. Of all things, the only plates I can't find on the farm are MD '69s. I've got 67s, 68s, 70s, 71s, but not 69s. Guess I got the wrong year truck.

Re: vintage license plates...

I run one on the back of my truck. In the state of North Carolina, you can run a license plate from the same model year as your vehicle as long as you keep the "real" plate in the truck and up to date. I found mine on Ebay.

Re: vintage license plates...

I have a '68 Jefferson Co. KY (where I live, Louisville) Plate on the front of my truck- Thought it was pretty cool- I found it on ebay for like 10 bucks- actually was in too good of condition for my beater, I had to scuff it up some before I put it on lol
I could run it here in KY as the actual plate, but haven't done so yet... you just have to keep the other plate in the vehicle

Re: vintage license plates...

I've got quite a few sets of old Michigan plates and I bought a set of 71 plates for my build for 15 or 20 bucks at an antique shop in Pen****er this summer. I didn't realize that I already had a matched set on the wall in the basement, but I guess they can stay on the wall now! I see quite a few sets on the road so I know it's legal in our state.

Re: vintage license plates...

I saw tons of vintage plates for sale at the goodguys show in fort worth. I picked up a pair of 1970 texas truck plates that were a little worn for $10. Now I have to get them registered.

Re: vintage license plates...

I'm going to use one on my '50, couldn't pass it up at only $10 and perfect condition. Arkansas doesn't allow it, figure I'll just keep my issued tag in the truck and hope I don't get too much grief from Johnny law.

My Dad runs a '62 Missouri tag on his Nova and the process was very easy.

Re: vintage license plates...

Oregon's rules for putting vintage plates on your car or truck are too restrictive. You basically are limited to occasional use in parades and cruise in's etc... They are currently offering a 150th anniversary plate that's a throwback to the plates from the 50's & 60's. I put a set on my truck even though they aren't quite correct for a '71. They do look a lot better than the modern Oregon plates I used to have.

Yup!

One of these days once my rig it back together I too want to use these Vintage plates.

Will have to check on that no inspection thing, but pretty darn sure you have to do it every year no matter what here in Missouri.

What I have heard from guys here in Missouri is if you do use your Vintage plates you are limited to like 25 miles per day!

Historic tags and YOM (year of manufacture) tags are two different things. Historic tags are limited to 1000 miles / yr. This makes sense, as the registration fees are much less and the tags do not have to be renewed. Really, who's checking though?
