17"x8" wheel/tire pics?

Hi guys,

I have a set of these wheels I am thinking of using on my truck, but am at a loss on tire size. I have seen a couple pics of 275/55R17 and 255/55/17's, but would like to see more of these and other sizes that fit 17x8's.

Thanks!

Re: 17"x8" wheel/tire pics?

Are you lowered any? I'm running 255/50/17 front with 275/55/17 rear and a 3.5/5 drop.
I know a 275/60/17-255/60/17 combo works good as well.

I'm not lowered aside from a little 40 yr old spring sag. I might lower in the future and i would keep this set of wheels, so I would need something that looks good both ways

Re: 17"x8" wheel/tire pics?

How much do you plan to lower, if and when you do? I would go with 275/60/17-255/60/17 tires. They're tall enough to fill up the wheelwells, and still look great. You can also run this size tire with a decent amount of drop.

Adam, I was hoping the beauty of my truck would completely overtake any view of the F@%D. I guess I was wrong.

Re: 17"x8" wheel/tire pics?

I would maybe go with a 2/4 drop, or just drop the rear to level the truck out...nothing too drastic.

Re: 17"x8" wheel/tire pics?

The 60 series tires will be perfect with a 2/4 drop. The 55's would still look good with that drop also. It's just gonna come down to tire preference now.

The only tires I know of that you can get matched sets for either size is Toyo, Goodyear, and Bridgestone in the 60 series and Pirelli in the 55 series. The Pirelli's are a bit expensive. The Toyo's won't be near as much, but it's very hard to find a Toyo tire dealer. I know you can get them from Newstalgia. I don't like Goodyear tires at all, and I didn't really care for the look of the Bridgestones.

Re: 17"x8" wheel/tire pics?

THanks for the responses guys. I am thinking 275/60's or 275/65's out back for sure, but dont know if i should get them for the front too. I like a bit more sidewall, and 50's seem a little too short. Does anyone have any pics of 275/60's-65's all the way around?

I am a big fan of Cooper Tires. I have Discoverer ATR's on my crew cab that have 80K on them and still have about 1/3 of the tread left. I can get both sizes above in the Discoverer H/T's, but I am not wild about the tread pattern. I wish Cooper Cobra's came in 17's!!

Re: 17"x8" wheel/tire pics?

There is 1" difference in the 275/60/17(30") and the 255/60/17(29"). You can get the Cooper Cobra in a 275/60/17. That's the only 17" tire in the Cobra though. Some local tire dealers will say that they're not made or not available. I know that Summit Racing has them. I can't remember right now who's it is, but there's a member here with 275/60/17's all around on his truck. It's a red 72 with TTII's. I just can't remember if it's a Chevy or GMC, though.

Darkhorse, my tires are Hankook Ventus ST RH06.

Huh, didn't know that... Cooper's website and Summit only go to 16" They must be special order?

Re: 17"x8" wheel/tire pics?

Has anyone used this wheel/tire set up?

Front wheels 17x8 w/ 4"BS with 275/55-17
Rear wheels 17x9.5 w/ 5" /BS with 275/55-17

Most people use 255/(55 or 50)-17 for the fronts, but I am having a really
hard time finding matching sets with the 255/275 combination. The overall
width of the 255/275 tires has only a 3/4" difference 275 (10.82") and 255 (10.04"). I figure that with the offset of the 8" wheel I can compensate for the wider tire at the front.

I can get a good price locally for the 275/55-17 on Toyo ST ii, and before I buy them I will like to know if there will be a fitment issue at the front.

Any ideas or suggestions?

I'm not sure what the backspace is on these wheels, I bought them used. I had to use a 1.25" spacer on the back wheels to keep the wheels from rubbing, I don't think it would have been a problem with 17x8's.

Well, it seems they may have discontinued them. You may be able to call around. Some tire dealers have access to several warehouses that may still have some in stock.

I did some searching recently on the Discount Tire and Tire Rack sites. There's lots of options on 275/60/17 tires. It's just very hard to find a matching 275/60-255/60/17 combo.

Dave,
My wheels are Summit 6 spoke Legends 17 x 8 w/4.5 BS. On my 69, I had to
add 1.5 in. spacers on the back to push the wheels out a bit. The fronts worked fine with the disc brake conversion which pushes the hubs out 3/4" on
each side. The Legend wheels are less than $200.00 ea.

Thanks Dale, I saw those the other when I was looking. I may recheck them out I keep thinking something used will turn up but not yet. I had done some measuring and thought the 4.5 might work but that might make them look inset too much.
