Transmission problem

Hi guys. Having a problem with my TH700R4 tranny. It shifts every now and then into 4th gear but does not stay in it. Checked the oil level and looked fine. The tranny has been overhauled completely. any help or tips ??? Cees.

Re: Transmission problem

1. don't trust the dipstick. i had one that was "full" and slipped all the time. mechanic at trans shop found it had wrong length dipstick so it was actually low on fliud
2. what gearing do you have in the rear end and how fast is the engine rpm when it does shift in and out of 4th?

Re: Transmission problem

thanks for the reply tobiahr. I have no idea what the gearing is at the end. Nor do i have any clues about the rpm. it does not have a rpm gauge. I see only one solution and that is to take of the oil pan and drain the tranny and then add fluid according to the workshop manual. expensive but the only solution i think.
cees.

Re: Transmission problem

i would check other cheaper things before draining and replacing the fluid. i asked about the rear end gearing because if it was rebuit with govener springs and weights for a higher gearing it will have this same symptom. you can find out the rear end gearing by jacking up the rear end , make sure the front wheels are blocked, and mark the driveshaft and the wheel with a chalk mark. check the front wheel chocks, put the vehicle in neutral and slowly turn the wheel 1 full turn. count the number of turns the driveshaft turns and you will have a good appromation of the rear end gear. you may also just have to adjust the TV cable properly. Your manual should have instructions for that.
