67 3/4 ton 4x4 project

Here's the story I was told. The guy I got it from bought it from up in Idaho, because it was mostly rust-free, and was just like his first truck. Hauled it from Idaho to central Texas, and started in on it. Replaced worn 283 with a refreshed 350 4-bolt from a 75 burb. Completely rebuilt the entire drive train, all bearings seals, anything that looked like it needed attention was replaced. New windshield and rear little window, new seals for both. New dual exhaust. Had just put new rims and tires on it. Was going from one ranch gate to the next hauling feed, when a kid came around the gravel rd to fast and side swiped him. Got out the passenger side, saw the gas tank filler neck, and decided he should have blown up and wasn't going to even get in it again. It's been sitting under a cedar tree since this last Easter.

It's pretty bad where it's bad, but it's great where it's not bad.
So far, i've removed the seat, the gas tank, got the smashed door open, getting ready to remove the long bed. Plans are to pound out the pillar (which is pretty bad), stick a new door on it, found a era correct factory flatbed to go on it. I need to find d-side rear leaf spring hangers and probably springs, one new rim and tire, then hopefully drive it into the ground.

I have a camera, and am not afraid to use it, and get windy at times, as you may can allready tell. Ya'll wish me luck, I'm going to need it.

Re: 67 3/4 ton 4x4 project

Made a deal on the flat-bed, should pick it up next week.
Rounding up parts, slowly.
Here's the flat bed. And a pic of my 68 panel wagon. I'm going to rattlecan this one too, but red. Would like to see some photos of red or red primer with white grill parts, if anyone has done that.
thanks, ya'll.

And, can ya'll recomend something to clean the floor mat. there are no tears, rips, holes, or blemishes in it. I'd like to clean it up a little, but not take it out. Just need to find some door sill plates, and the floor is good to go.

Re: 67 3/4 ton 4x4 project

A little progress. Using a hydraulic ram, and a little sledge hammer, managed to get it somewhat pounded back out. Got to find a door local to stick on there, just for alignment purposes. Found what may be a perfect match door to go back on with later. Found a gas tank, few other odds and ends.

Re: 67 3/4 ton 4x4 project

Brought the flat-bed home this morning. Haven't decided about the headache rack. If it fits the lines of the cab, I may keep it, or may build one to suit me. I'm thinking sand it down, treat the wood, and paint it black, if I can find a sealer that will take paint. It's going to be used, haul fence building stuff, gravel, dirt, etc. Open to suggestions.

Re: 67 3/4 ton 4x4 project

Got the bed off this evening. Was very happy with the condition of everything but the d-side leaf spring hangers and shackle. I knew the shackle was busted. Looks like I can reuse the front hanger. Popped off 3 of the 4 rivets on the front hanger, but the hanger appears unharmed. the rear hanger and shackle are toast. springs look ok.
Debating whether or not to hang onto the bed. The p-side side and front panel and tailgate are ok. Most of the framework underneath and the strips that hold the wood are ok. Is that something worth hanging onto for someone, or is it just a good place to put scrap metal?

Re: 67 3/4 ton 4x4 project

Found a door to stick in the hole. Found a perfect match door, but shipping is a killer. Maybe after Christmas I'll have some extra money to ship a door. Looking better, though.
Still needs some pounding and cranking.

Gap is way too big. It was really crunched, metal had folded in places, and is hard to unfold. At the moment, i can crank it out with the power puller, but it pops back.

Nice progress. It is coming out, I'm sure it won't be an easy job with as bad as it was smashed in.

Re: 67 3/4 ton 4x4 project

Waiting to pick up my new gas tank. Hopefully this weekend. Ran some fuel hose into a gas can, shot a little go juice down the carb, and she fired right off. Runs good, no smoke. Starts now on the first bump of the key.

How do you reduce the idle on a quadrajet? Way too high. this is a 75 350 with a factory quadrajet.....electric choke, which isn't hooked up.

Re: 67 3/4 ton 4x4 project

Haven't done a thing to the truck since I last posted. I've been working on a 62 K10 that followed me home.
Today was good, though. I had cleaned out my new used tank before. Put it in, added a seat belt for someone in the middle, added a fuel filter, hooked it all up and fired her off. Then went for a short drive around the pasture. Was kind of babying it, because of the rear spring hanger and shackle. I have a new set coming this week from a board member. Finally cranked on the pillar enough to get the door to open and close. All in all, a good day. First time it's moved under it's own power since the wreck.

Re: 67 3/4 ton 4x4 project

more progress. Fixed a few vac leaks, runs like a top now. Fuel gauge isn't working, I believe it's the sending unit after searching here and watching what happens when grounding and unplugging. Today got the 4 rivets off the front rear spring hanger, and attached with grade 8 bolts. New rear hanger and shackle should be here this next week. I used an air chisel, grinder, drill and several cuss words to get them off. Am open to suggestions before I try to get the 4 off the rear hanger.
Should this be moved to the 4x4 project section? Any moderators looking?

Forgot to post pics. And forgot I also sanded, primed, and painted the ashtray with "Perfect Match" by Duplicolor. Not a perfect match, but dang close.

Re: 67 3/4 ton 4x4 project

and painted the door panel in the dark. This was pretty nasty, from the donor door. Sanded it down, primed with Ace hardware primer (good stuff and lays well), then shot it with the perfect match. Looks good in the dark, hope it's ok in the daylight.

Re: 67 3/4 ton 4x4 project

Found a top of the line sound system for the 67. This is a brand new, never opened, still in the wrapper, hermetically sealed, RCA AM/FM 8 track tape player. And no, I'm not going to cut the dash, I like my radio delete. Going to rig something to mount it under the dash.

"What song is it you wanna hear?".....FREE BIRD!!!!
