five lug conversion?

I've been told by some folks that if you want to do a crossmember conversion to get front disc brakes and five lug , that you must get the setup from a 71 or 72 truck or burb. Others have told me that 73-87 crossmembers will work, as well, but the track width may or may not be the same depending on who you talk to.
I have a chance to buy the complete crossmember and suspension out of a 71 burb as well as the 12 bolt and I'm wondering how much the stuff is really worth, as I really don't like to pay too much for stuff.... Opinions?
