Radiator Options

Can anybody tell me what options I have for a replacement radiator for my 66. I'm pretty sure this has been talked about so if you know what thread it is a link would be cool. the search engine is not being my friend today and I would like to spend more time working on the truck and not on the internet.

the original radiator has a leak and not sure if it can be fixed. I'm going to take it to a radiator shop today. But just in case it's too far gone are there other vehicles that have similar radiators that would fit? any help will be great.

thanks
Ed

Re: Radiator Options

As long as the tanks are usable, any competent radiator shop can rebuild your original even if it requires a new core. There are also replacement radiators available from any of the classic truck suppliers, or there are universal radiators available from Summit Racing and Jegs. All you need is something that will fit in the space available, and has the right size radiator hose outlets on the correct side of the truck. Griffin Radiator (and probably others) will also custom build one for your application, but cost becomes a major consideration when dealing with any of the new radiators. Before spending money on a new one do some research so you make an informed decision on whether aluminum or copper/brass is a better selection for your situation and budget.

I'm running a 1968 Impala air conditioning radiator in mine, but the chance of finding a used one in a wrecking yard isn't much better than finding an original truck model in good serviceable condition.

And here are some previous threads on radiator options:

thanks for the help. I think my search is over. Rock auto has a replacement from 180 - 212; depending on manufacturer. I think I'm sold.

Re: Radiator Options

those radiators fit but not perfect. I have one also and it really dose not center up with the support so if you are running a shroud it might be difficult.

Re: Radiator Options

You might want to try theses guys: https://www.1800radiator.com/ I purchased mine through them, delivered to my door for right around $200.00 for a three core radiator. They come with a lifetime warranty (which I have to admit I've already had to use once) and they do stand behind their product. It was a very close fit, the only difference was the lower radiator brackets - I had to relocate them inwards IIRC.

Re: Radiator Options

Hey Ed,

I used this one from evilbay.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Alumi...item2a022af0e7

It fit the stock mounts with a little trimming of the lower brackets and a little grinding on the rubber isolators.

Do you rememer the original application for your upper radiator hose? The molded hose looks like a perfect fit.

Re: Radiator Options

I will get the part # tonight for the radiator and the upper/lower hoses, if it stops raining I will also have a picture of the lower mount to give you some ideas.

Re: Radiator Options

The part # for the upper hose is Gates#20694, it was for a 69-72 V8 application. I will attach the label off of the radiator box, I kept it with all of my receipts. I couldn't get any pictures of my lower mounting arrangement, all it amounts to is a long carriage type bolt through the lower mount from a 67-72 truck. It is spaced up from the core support to the height you want with a nut on the top and bottom of the core support. The low profile head allows it to fit under the rubber cushion in the mount.

The only modification needed was the removal of the original radiator mounting brackets them mock up the mounting position drill the holes and done. When I got the radiator the overflow was turned in the direction of the battery which created interference with the hose, I had the locate shop turn the neck and ran the hose back across the top of the radiator and used the wiper tank for my over flow.

I'm leaning toward this one:

Anybody see a problem with this choice?
