Suburban Side Windows

Ive got a 1960 GMC Suburban that I want to replace side window glass...most was broken or missing. I plan on having two fixed [one on each side] and two sliding. It seems the the best rubber is from Steele and I know a little pricy but Iv'e fought with cheaper window seals and learned the extra money is worth it. I did remove the window tacks [frames] and cut out rusted through areas and replaced. Question is...do you install the windows in the frames with new seals and then bolt the assembly in the window opening or do you bolt the frame in the opening and then install the glass and seals?

Re: Suburban Side Windows

I did mine a few years ago but I think I put the windows in and then bolted the frame in, while setting the rubber seal.

Re: Suburban Side Windows

There is a place here in town that has the pattern to cut new glass. I plan on putting new in mine here real soon. Let me know when you have your Burb down here so I can see it. Heck, I'll help you with the glass for the experience. ( rather break yours than mine)

Re: Suburban Side Windows

KIC...Don't know if I'll be bringing this sub down this year..I have quite a bit to do...body is done...I plan on re-wiring and re-doing the brakes. New dual master all newe lines as well as wheel cylinders and drums. Still need a motor and trans [TH350]. Thats where the project stands now, back to the windows. I did bring down the frames and repaired the tracks. I plan on keeping the back windows with sliders but the front passenger and drivers side fixed. That's what I'll need the template for or steered in the right direction to a glass shop that does. So now I need to order the track felts/runners and with the fixed glass can then install the glass. My slider glass is good.I would appreciate the name of the glass company with the template . When I get all the parts I need and glass,I'll send you a PM if your still interested to help..

Re: Suburban Side Windows

Never seen the combo of front solid and rear sliders. My next door neighbor has a 64 and made the rear two windows solid and kept the middle two as sliders. I'll get you the name of the shop. Can't remember off the top of my head, but I know exactly where it is. They are still in business. Definitely will help. The experience will help me on mine. I'll get the shop name today.

Re: Suburban Side Windows

Sorry it took so long. Went back to North Carolina to see my daughter and son-in-law over the CHRISTmas holidays. Found the card with the info:

National Auto Glass
2418 N. Stone
520-622-4849

I talked to Andy Wilson, he is the manager there. They have an area with all types of patterns for all types of vehicles, including the Burb.

Re: Suburban Side Windows

I took a 1957 Belair to this place you mentioned...National Auto Glass. I called ahead of time and asked if they can put in a windshield in my 57...."yeah,we do it all the time". Took the 57 there and the first thing two guys did was take pry bars to remove the stainless. Naturally I jumped in and told these guys that their isd a stud with a nut on the inside that has to be removed and from there it only got worse. I swear,I was more nervous than with my wife delivering our first child. Four hours later, and some bent stainless, I was out of there with appoligies.
So unless you know this Andy personally, you might look elseware.
