upgraded alternator now charging issues

hey folks wondering if you could tell me if i did something wrong when i upgraded to a modern alternator on my 69 blazer. as state in an article i disconnected the plug from the old external regulator, tied the 2 outer wires from said connector together, dead ended the other 2. then tired the original 10awg wire into the alternator and the other 2 wires that went to it into the pigtail.
