OK...I'll try and stick to the subject this time.
Had this truck about a year and immediately replaced the starter after I got it. I thought it made too much noise. The "new" starter from AutoZone was just as noisy. By noisy I don't mean grinding...its just louder than I thought it should be. On the heat issue...The exhaust pipe passes within about 1.5 inches of the starter now that I have "adjusted" it, since I put in new brake lines. I thought that having the exhaust in contact with my new brake line would probably be a bad idea.(Duh!) I'll see if I start having starting problems. Jim Mt Juliet |

I don't know how long the previous one lasted...but the ACDelco in my truck has been there since 1998 when it was converted from a 3-speed stick to a TH400.

I had a problem with Kragen rebuilt straters and alternators. I was tempted to put them in with velcro!

if memory serves, (and it seldom does heheh) ,
chevy addressed this starter overheat problem around 74 0r 75 they started putting a sheet metal heat shield between the starter and the exhaust system. i think it bolted to the starter. several of my buddies used to get them from the chevrolet dealerships or from junk yards and bolt them on to there cars. that would usually fix the problem. even on a high compression big block , using the stock starter. heat is the big starter killer.

so that explains why when my truck is cold it starts really well..and then after driving the starter barely cranks the truck over, due to heat. I am getting ready to replace it. Its the starter that came with the truck, dont know how many or how long.
