The toy is going to get a promotion to
.
.daily driver. I decided to sell my 2008 truck while it would still bring top $$$, so I will start using my 72 as my daily driver. I love these old trucks but it is definitely going to take some getting used to driving one every day. I will probably drive the longhorn more than the SWB, but at least I have a couple choices.
Hopefully the railroad will pick back up and I can get back into something new. I am thinking a Camaro would be pretty sweet.

What do you mean you never built it for dependability? Can you explain more please?

These trucks are like Timex watches,a good horse,Farmall tractor...etc. They'll keep giving service and look good doing it. Just keep up with 'er as age don't lie. I had to drive my '72 daily for about 1/3 of last year and it never needed anything but an oil change. I'd only drive these trucks if it weren't for the road salts around here. I used to. I did a two truck rotation. Catch up on service/repairs on one while running the other. I'd run my 4wd in the winter, that already had rust, and the nicer trucks for the other 9 months. In a way that's still what I do. Just my winter truck is a '92 now, which is about as old as my '72 was when it was new.

Drive mine daily. In fact it's the only vehicle I own. I love the truck and get a lot of thumbs up from people but, as Gene eluded, there are places I can't go because of dependability issues. Plus it's difficult to work on one and drive it too.
Be careful with her, you'll get used to it, and I'm betting you're gonna love driving it every day! |

I'd buy a cheap S10 pickup for a daily,... and keep that beauty away from all the crazy drivers, that aren't paying attention to where they are going.
Maybe cruise the Super on the weekends,... but I'd never put it "out there" on a daily basis. (my 2 cents)

I drive my 71 SWB everyday to work because my modern truck is too tall for parking garage at work. I enjoy driving it everyday. My truck isn't as nice as yours, but I would still use it the same if it was!!!!!

Same here, though it's sitting in the driveway right now. We got about seven inches of snow the other day and expecting 3-5 inches more tonight/tommorrow. Doesn't do well when the streets are slick.

Re: The toy is going to get a promotion to

I dont think I will mind driving one of these old trucks on a daily basis, I have done it off and on over the last 22 years. I even had to drive the black truck in my profile for a while because I did not have another driver.
My main concern is the fact that it could get in a fender bender. The paint is not great but it is pretty nice for 39 years old and I would hate to lose that survivor paint. I think I would be better off to drive the longhorn. Not that I would rather something happen to it, but if it did, at least it needs paint.

That is one of the things I am going to miss from the new truck, THE REMOTE START. It sure came in handy on days like that.

I have to agree with you on that one!!! But untill the railroad stops putting me on furlough or on the retension board, I don't really think I have much of a choice.

Re: The toy is going to get a promotion to

Nice truck you have there! Why not drive it every day, thats what they are made for. People drove them every day back in 1972, what's the difference now! As long as you keep up on the oil changes, tune-ups, etc, etc, the truck will give you miles of trouble free and enjoyable service. Plus it's nice to go somewhere and not see a dozen trucks that look just like the new one you just spent 40-grand to buy! Just my 2-cents. Joseph

Re: The toy is going to get a promotion to

And they can be again. Mine, with new suspension, interior and redone engine can make it feel almost like it was when it was new. I've driven my 70 every day for the last four years despite the fact that I also have a newer model F150 that just sits in the driveway. I only get into the F150 just to feel what a tight, quiet, rattle free truck should sound like then I work hard to make my C10 the same way.

Did that Longhorn come from the factory with the tilt or was it added? I'm trying to confirm what someone said yesterday that tilt trucks came with a black wheel, column and dash pad. Love the saddle bucket seat interior!
