Seats Q?
Hi guys in the market for some seats.
Main reason is i have a bad back (wont bore you with the details) but my bench seat is not really helping me when i go on long trips I travel to my parents usually onece to two times a month (hour or so drive) and i'm in brutal pain by the time i get there. was wondering what seat would be a good upgrade. i have a CC so i need both back and front. I would like something that is easy to install and requires as lil cutting drilling of my cab. Thanks. Dru

Re: Seats Q?
I, too, have a bad back. My 83 Dump truck had a bench seat that was very uncomfortable. I had some buckets that I had purchased for my Berretta(sp) and never used. Put those in and back ache is not so severe. Only problem was that when a student welded in new brackets that he fabricated for me he noticed that the seats were from an old F--- Bronco!

Re: Seats Q?
The way I would make the decision is to pick which of my friends had the most comfortable vehicle. Then Id check the parts yards till I founds that style seats. With back problems your gonna hate the truck before to long if it hurts to drive. Id make the choice on comfort alone and then try to find someone that does upholstery to make the seats match

Re: Seats Q?
I have a bad back in a weird spot. Being 6'6" tall doesn't help the issue any, either. I found really good luck with 92-94 Suburban seats, but they are apparently plated in gold around here. I went through the early (83 to 87) Suburban buckets, but they didn't work. I finally found some decent relief using '91 Suburban seats.
But I agree with xs-style. Find something comfortable and swap those in. My wife's 2007 HHR seats are really comfortable for me. 9 hour road trips to Idaho to visit the family aren't so bad now. |

Re: Seats Q?
The best seats I have owned are by Recaro (buckets). They are built with a metal frame and have straps rather than springs for seat support. They are pricey, but you can find rebuilt ones on Ebay. Other companies make knockoffs, like Corbeau. I got my base Recaros for about $200 per many years ago. I had them rebuilt and recovered in leather and eventually sold them on Ebay for $425 for the pair.
The most practical thing for you would be to get seats out of a late model extended cab or crew cab. The front seat for late model Silverados/Sierras go for about $250 around here. You could hold off on the rear seat until you find out if you like the front seats. Of course, either option would mean you need to make or buy custom mounting brackets. One other option is late model Chrysler Sebring convertible seats which have the integral seat belt. They are relatively compact, so you would have a little extra side room in your truck. An acquaintance of mine put these seats in his 56 Bel Air street rod and it looked great, especially with the power adjustments included and leather finish. You could probably get the seats and center console in one shot. You can find whole Sebring convertibles from the late 90s for $1000-$2000 - take the seats and salvage the rest. |

Nothing will bolt right up always need fab work, even for factory buckets.

Re: Seats Q?
just a note the bars on the seat bottoms are 16 inches wide(my 89's sub buckets were and the 78's too)
assuming you can find ones that wide should be easier to mount up and with the dial you can ajust support as nessary

Re: Seats Q?
I installed the 60/40 bench from a '96 Chevy into my '85. Love it. To make it fit, I removed the slide mechanism from the '96 seats, and made a framework to tie left and right together. this was simply a big rectangle of 1x1. I then figured out where I wanted the sliding range of the seat to be, since it would be adapted to the '85 slide brackets. Made a couple more bracket adaptations, and it all mounted in. My wife and I really like this seat, as we have a '96 Silverado also (her truck).
there is a picture in my profile.

Re: Seats Q?
I don't have any from when I built it, but I'll see if I can get a picture of it in the truck.

Re: Seats Q?
FYI, for pickups if you want buckets, get them out of a Suburban and remove the inner floor mount (it is tacked on) bend the rear seat mount brackets and it will bolt in once you weld the inner mount back on.

Re: Seats Q?
I have an 88-99 bench seat in mine. Used the original tracks and just drilled new holes in the seat. As close to a bolt-in as you could ask for. It is much more comfortable than the original. I am 6'1"
