firing problem?
Hello- im new to the site, but i was going to see if i could get some advice. I have a 1972 3/4 ton pickup. the motor took a crap on me but i recently got a 79 parts truck with a motor that apparently runs. It had a points distributor in it, and it wouldnt start. i was told it was the coil. But i went ahead and put my hei distributor in, and it still isnt getting fire. so neither of the distributors would do anything, is there anything i could do to test the distributor? or maybe it could be another problem. I would greatly appreciate some advice.

Hello there, welcome to the site. Alright, are you getting fire to the coil for sure? Process of elimination so I can help you out here.
1. Fire to the coil 2. Fire from the coil 3. Fire to the plugs Where does it stop first? |

Re: firing problem?
It sounds like you have a power issue. You can’t use the power wire that was on the points system. You need to run a 12V keyed (power with ignition switch in the on and crank position) to the HEI distributor. If I remember correctly there is a un-fused terminal on the fuse block that does this function it’s just a matter of running a wire from the fuse block to the HEI BAT connection. This is where I would start, and welcome to the fourm.

Yeah, good point.. Didn't think to wonder if he had changed his power supply.

Re: firing problem?
well i went ahead and said nevermind the points distributor, but last time i remember my truck would run fine with the hei distributor, its brand new. but the cap is old so it could be the coil. But like i said a few months ago with my old motor it would crank, it was missing because it needed to be rebuild but it still ran so im not sure i recon ill buy a new cap, and see if it will fire up

Re: firing problem?
Well no I wouldn't necessarily buy a new cap either. Could be your ignition module under the cap as well.

Re: firing problem?
thats what i was thinking, but it could be what makman said also, see in my 72 all the wiring is for the hei distributor, but not in the 79 i was going to make sure the motor would run good before i did the swap. i guess ill try these things and see what happens. But i really appreciate the advice, see im a young one, so i have yet to learn all the tricks of the trade haha.

Re: firing problem?
I was using the original 9v wire and it idled and started like crap, I was reminded by a friend that I needed to replace the 9v and put in the 12v, much better afterwards.
here are some pictures, one is where it connects to the HEI and the other is where it is located on the firewall, the terminal block(the thicker red wire), hope this helps..And welcome to the site
