Big block info

I'm going to check out a 72 bb swb truck. Needs lots of work, what signs to look for to see if it's real?

Spid matching vin of coarse
Having the 400 on the spid
The 72 special mounts. (hard to see I'm sure)

There was something about dual exhaust hangers?

Any other info would be helpful. I want to be over knowledged!!!!

Thank you.

The passenger side will have a heat shield where the exhaust passes by the floorboard, 4 row radiator, TH400 trans, high hump trans tunnel.

Re: Big block info

This truck has a factory rear leaf spring set up, according to the spid. Was that a special order in 72 for a shortbox truck?

Leafs were just an option on these trucks.

Re: Big block info

I looked at this truck today, the guy was very nice. he had 6-7 trucks under the snow. This looks to be a true BB SWB truck. pass side shield, high hump, the tag on the inner fender also agrees.

The SPID vin matches the cab. half of the SPID was missing, be the vin is on it, and the 400 engine, leaf rear, special paint.

The cab is junk. It comes with a fairly good cab, hood, new doors and fenders, Tailgate is ok, bed is not to bad.

This is pretty much exactly what i have been searching for. Truck needs a complete restore. but is it worth the price. He knows exactly what he has, and is firm on the $4500 price.

I'd appreciate any imput. I really want this truck, but i'm having a tough time convincing myself on spending that much.
Thanks
Glen

Re: Big block info

I don't think I would spend that kind of money on a non-running truck, unless I was going to restore it as a numbers matching show truck and had all the original documentation for it.

That's a plus! But I would still have a hard time coughing up $4500 for it

Re: Big block info

A big block shortie is cool, but that's quite a bit of green for such an incomplete truck. You could get a swb for less, and stab a big block in it yourself and be $$ ahead IMO.

Re: Big block info

Hey Glen,

If you're going to keep it, then do you really care if it's the real deal or not? If not, then start off with something that will get you farther down the road. I like the kind of truck you're looking at because it's fun(?) chasing down the parts for them.

Is your plan to do a restoration or a resto-mod?

How does one wind up with only half a SPID anyway?

Re: Big block info

I'd like to have a matching numbers bb swb, but it's not that important. I Just think a bb swb would be a ball. I don't want a super show truck, I want something the women or boy and I can jump in and go, and I'm going to put my shop logo on it.

I don't know what a resto-mod is?

The SPID was ripped. I'll post a pic of it tomorrow.

Re: Big block info

resto mod is a cross between a restoration, and a modified.
It generally means a restored body, a close to restored interior/mildly modified, and then anything goes as far as suspention mods and under hood mods.
It is a term that seems to be slow in some circles, while other circles have been using it for over a decade.

Re: Big block info

Another note on originality......The front driver frame near the PS pump lines has a stamp code that should start with "72" if it is the original frame followed by a letter that corresponds to which plant it was built at and ends with the serial number of the truck found in the vin. Furthermore the engine stamp code on the passenger/radiator end of the block on the head ledge will have a code that tells where the engine is from, when it was made, and what kind of truck it was put in. For example my engine stamp reads " T0101TLM" which means T=tonawanda engine plant, 01=Jan, 01=1st day of Jan, TLM= 1972 402 truck with 400 trans. This will help tell if it is the original BB the truck was born with...if that matters to you.

Offer him what you are willing to give, and tell him to call you if he changes his mind. Explain that you have the money in the bank, and the day he calls you will get it and be right over. If you find a truck in the mean time, deal off. You might be surprised and get a call in a couple weeks.

Truck was complete, it was in the body shop for restoration an the owner ran out of money, so the body shop guy bought it. It comes With a good hood, new doors an fenders (lmc) and a semi restored cab. I just want the truck as it sits, I have most of the part to fix it.
But again it's exactly what I want. 2 tone paint, big block, and so on.
He did say he had a guy coming this week for a second time, so I'm betting it will go.
