Re: 67 drums

I'm not 100% sure, but I think they were put on to reduce vibration & noise.

Re: 67 drums

vibration and noise is what I've always been told. Like when you run your finger around a wine glas... the ringing.
I've run a 69 GMC without the springs and was amazed that I did hear a tick of that ringing.

Re: 67 drums

Also, I think they only put them on the front drums. I don't recall ever seeing them on the rear.

Re: 67 drums

They are for vibration and noise and as far as I know were only a factory item. I don't remember seeing any aftermarket drums with the springs although some had the groove so you could transfer the springs to the new drums.

Re: 67 drums

They're on all four of my drums, I kinda doubt something like that would be just a dealer add-on.

Re: 67 drums

Oh heck. Now I'm going to have to pull off my back wheels.

Thanks guys!!!

Actually, a great question. Never really thought about it and
swapping out the springs sounds tortuous but ... doable.

Re: 67 drums

aftermarket drums don't have the provisions for the spring, so those drums don't have them, the originals (and probably old aftermarket ones) had the groove

Re: 67 drums

no it isn't a must have... like mentioned above, the aftermarket ones (all you can buy new) don't have them nor the provisions for them
