Need a little help please!
Hello men, having a confusing little issue with the truck today, need some experts input. Started truck up this morning no problem, let her warm up for a bit, and went to take off... killed the motor...no biggie, BUT when I went to restart got a few weak whirrr, whirrr, whirrr sounds from starter, but no start! Came back a few hours later and truck started like it was brand new! Battery strong, alternator fine(per my tester) what could have caused this? No temp gauge so I dont know how hot it was running, thermostat prob? Thanks for any help in advance!

Re: Need a little help please!
If you checked the alternator output and it was putting out at least 13.5 or more volts to the batter then it could be a starter solenoid or starter drive. You can probably get the whole starter complete for just a little more at Auto Zone.

Re: Need a little help please!
sounds like the starter solenoid http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=42690 is weak or dry and it will not engage the starter drive http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=42360;)

Re: Need a little help please!
Headers? If so they are death to the starter without a shield of some sort.

Re: Need a little help please!
Cold it turns over strong, hot it struggles to turn over at all. Seems heat related. Ill check starter solenoid tomorrow, may be the ticket...

Probably Starter Heat Soak from the exhaust. Only shows up when the exhaust gets the starter hot... LockDoc

Re: Need a little help please!
My truck didn't have any starting problems until I changed carbs. The new Edelbrock Q-Jet was a lot leaner running than the Edelbrock 1405 I took off of it. I have headers, too. I had to add the heat shield to the starter, but it solved the problem.

Re: Need a little help please!
I had a similar problem when I replaced a Holley 1850 on my small block with an Edelbrock 1406 carb. It would start just fine cold, but if I had driven for 15 to 20 miles then turned it off it would do exactly as described... like it was straining to turn over.
The starter was a new reman AC Delco hi-torque with heat sheild and wrap with matching solenoid. It started giving me "hot start" problems when I changed to the Edelbrock carb. After numerous calls to Edelbrock tech, I determined that my carb would drip raw fuel down onto the intake floor after turning off a hot engine. It would also stink up my garage with a raw fuel smell. I never really figured out exactly why it did this, but I figured it was a needle and seat problem. I replaced the needles and seats, but still no better. I changed back to my old grungy Holley and the problem magically went away. NoNeck

Re: Need a little help please!
Alright all, I finally sucked it up and bought a new starter from NAPA. Installed in truck and replaced battery wires as well. Believe I put the thing in correctly, but after all is said and done truck wont even turn over now. I rechecked all connections, still no start... now Im a little irritated and need some help on where to go next with this thing!

Re: Need a little help please!
Yeah, it's possible you got a bad one but before you go through all of the trouble of removing it, recheck all of the wiring to make absolutely sure it's right.
If you still have the coil here's a good wiring diagram: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=251165 |

You need to be a little more specific. Do you mean it won't turn over or it turns over but won't start. Does the solenoid click when you turn the key to start? If you got the Yellow and Purple wires switched around it wouldn't do anything. LockDoc

Re: Need a little help please!
Yeah Doc, it is absolutely dead, no noise whatsoever. The heavy bastard fell while I was taking the old one out, and may have tugged the wire from the ignition switch, now that I think of it...as I had forgotten to loosen it prior to removal... better check..

Now back to the OP... sounds like you might have pulled that wire by accident when the starter fell. I would check it all the way back to the harness. Gary
