s10 swappers......fuel neck and gas cap
hey guys,
Im using a the stock s10 gas tank out of a 1991 s10. Im going to run the neck through the drivers side bed side like the '47 and 48's. can you guys tell me what you doing about your filler neck and gas cap. I see that some people are cutting the AD filler neck and cutting the s10 neck and then welding them up to fit their needs. I would like to use the stock s10 neck but I need to find a screw in cap that fits. I can only find the stock plastic ones but I want a chrome one. Does anyone know if any other vehicles caps will work or where I can find a chrome one. I know that some motorcycles utilize aftermarket screw in caps. Im heading to my local harley davidson dealership tomorrow to check the fit. any info would be great. thanks

Re: s10 swappers......fuel neck and gas cap
i'm also using the original S10 tank in a '48 Chevy and was going to use a '48 style neck (i thought it would be cool to flip it from the passenger's side to the driver's side and see how many people would actually notice), but after getting one and seeing it hanging out of the side i changed my mind and got a hagan fuel door. however, my bed is raised 2" and there wouldn't be enough room to install the door if it wasn't.
the pic is with it tacked together. i also extended the stake pocket because it looked unfinished in my opinion with the bed raised.

you have another non-welding option. you can take the filler neck of almost any truck or older car with the screw on end that you like. cut it with a hacksaw, and cut the S10s one. goto a marine (boat) store and they will have special hose designed to connect fuel fillers to the fuel tank. it is very thick, very stiff, re-enforced rubber. I use the Gates brand myself. Buy the correct clamps for it there as well. You will only need enough to go between the two filler necks with overlap. Its not very flexible, so cut the necks so that the rubber connector has a fairly straight shot. |

Re: s10 swappers......fuel neck and gas cap
rhodog,
I don't know if it will shine like chrome, but my s10 is so old that it came with a metal screw in cap (plastic must not have been invented yet). I remember looking through your build, and seeing your polishing skills. I want to say that the cap is aluminum, but I will have to check that. If it is, you might try shinning it up. You can have mine if you like. My s10 was an early 82. I think I still have your email - I'll send you a photo. Jeff |

Re: s10 swappers......fuel neck and gas cap
I took my late model plastic cap and took it apart, then I took my original '52 cap and took it apart. With some plastic adhesive I put the two together. Now I can use the new filler neck but have the look of the original.

Re: s10 swappers......fuel neck and gas cap
I cut down my s10 filler neck because it had a rollover valve in it that I wanted to keep, and bought a chrome cap off a 90's model harley for $10 or so. I used the stock grommet out of my cab, but it doesn't fit all that well so I bought a replacement one for a suburban which I think will work better. See my build thread for pics.

Re: s10 swappers......fuel neck and gas cap
Stopped by the Harley dealership in Cincinnati today. I knew that I would get more help from them then my local little shop. It took a few minutes to find what I needed. I tried about 4 or 5 different caps but finally found one that worked. Here is the Harley Davidison part number, maybe it will help someone else down the road - 61102-83C. The parts guy told me it was for a 1982-1982 FX. It fits perfect. I need to clean the neck and remove the triangular mounting plate and mount the neck. I ordered a stock 47-48 rubber grommet from classicparts but it doesnt fit right so I had to order a "custom" one, hope to have this week. Thanks again for all the help and ideas.

Re: s10 swappers......fuel neck and gas cap
Got my fuel neck, sending unit in and wired up and all the fuel lines finished up. Thanks for all the help and ideas about the cap. If anyone needs a grommet, here is the website I got mine from

Thanks for posting the link I was looking for some way to hide my wires better and I am stealing your gas cap idea.

This is why I like this site. The ideas to get around roadblocks is amazing.
The filler turned out great.
