What's that sound?.....
I've had a squealing sound coming from the engine/transmission for about a month now, i have replaced the following: Harmonic balancer, water pump, ac pulley, alternator pulley, and throwout bearing and re- aligned clutch and pressure plate.
Heres where it gets tricky... It makes a loud squeaking sound when the clutch is pressed in, or after it has been when your driving it. I made some calls today and was told that it could be the thrust bearings in the engine? Engine is off a fresh rebuild...havent even met the 500 mile mark yet..any help appericated.

Re: What's that sound?.....
If your thrust bearing goes out you should see brass/bronze/copper looking metal pieces in you oil.
Could also be your input shaft bearing to the tranny or the throw out bearing. Does it act funny when you drive it or does it just make a noise. |

Re: What's that sound?.....
No it dosent shift or drive any different, its just a loud squeal or squeak. The thing that was pointed out to me, is that the harmonic balancer moves slightly when the clutch is pressed in, hence where everyone said thrust bearings. also I should mention that the squeal does not happen when parked in neutral, only with the clutch engaged. New fly wheel, got it when we rebuilt the engine. The serpentine belt is new, so im pretty sure its not slipping.

Re: What's that sound?.....
Cut the oil filter apart, and look for copper chunks in the filter pleats. That is the easiest/cheapest way to check for bearing dammage. A moving damper on a fresh motor is not a good sign.

Re: What's that sound?.....
Does it do it only when driving or also sitting. I ask because mine squeals sometimes when driving but I know it's the speedometer cable making the noise.

Re: What's that sound?.....
Does it only do this after the motor has warmed up?

Re: What's that sound?.....
if you can see the balancer move when hitting the clutch you got bigger problems

Re: What's that sound?.....
This is what my brother and I did to find a rattle on his vehicle many years ago but if you do it it's at your own risk. (Gotta say this these days...)
We chocked the front wheels, raised the rear wheels and put them on jack stands. Started the engine and I got under the car and watched and listened with my "stethoscope" -a 2 foot piece of gardent hose while my brother worked the clutch and shifted the gears. With the garden hose to my ear I could listen at various locations to get an idea where the sound was coming from. IIRC, in our case it turned out to be a rattle inside the tranny. |

Re: What's that sound?.....
My guess the squeeling is coming from your wallet!!
I really don't know. I'm not a very good mechanic but I sure am a good parts changer!! Good luck! Keith |

Re: What's that sound?.....
I know this is going to sound crazy, but i had a loud squealing noise on a fresh rebuild and it was driving me crazy. It took me a couple of hours to figure it out. And what it was i had all my breather holes on the valve covers blocked and the squealing noise was comming from the dipstick tube. and when i pulled the dipstick out it went away. Bottom line engine was creating to much vacum in the block.I put a breather cap on and never heard it again. This might be your case. but it happens

A friend once complained that his transmission was going out on his old datsun with floor shift. It was making a whirring sound when he shifted to second gear. I drove with him for a block or two and found out the boot was torn and when he shifted up it opened it up. He was hearing road noise. Saved him from buying a transmission. |
