"patina" paint TF

Saw a pic of a truck recently, think it was on here. I thought I saved it but can't find it anywhere on my computer or the board, it was a Task Force probably 55-57 that had really nice original patina (around here we call it weathered) or else it was a really good patina paint job. I know that sounds pretty vague but I really like the way it looked, anyone have pics of a "patina" TF ?

I don't think rust and corrosion is considered a "good" paint job.

Here is mine, not touching paint but doing a mechanical resto, including Camaro front clip, 348 "W" T400 & keeping the Spicer 45.

i grew up around Chevy's and always felt that a Chevy should be clean, not necessarily painted super nice, but clean. ive been into vw's the past 6 years and have owned over 8 or so. and ive gotten more money for original painted vw busses with rust than ones that were faded but not rusty. it seems a new culture of those that have less, or cant bring themselves to spend on things like accessories and paint. i like my chevy,s clean, and my vw;s grungy...funny but now i see it coming into Truck scene. Camaros will still need paint but trucks are a bit different.....working class. like 100 dollar jeans that are beat right off the shelf. clean or dirty i say roll it....you cant take it with you!!!

I didn't really get the fake patina thing at first but as someone who has done some body work and seen lots of cars with great paint that are crap underneath I do really appreciate a truck that's still wearing it's original finish.

I'm not into all the nasty rust and signs of obvious rough use and abuse but there is something really cool about one that's been kept in nice shape with regular care and the paint is just rubbed thin in spots from age and regular well-earned baths. I'd take a older truck with a thin original paint job over one with a fresh splash-job any day.

Still haven't seen the one I was looking for, please post more if you have them....

Bob, thanks for the complement! Its a rust free Californian 56 GMC that ended up in a barn in Vermont a year before I got my hands on it.
That pic in the snow is just before it got loaded on a truck shipped to the port of Balimore & loaded on a contaner ship bound for Melbourne Australia.

Well if the day ever comes you decide to sell it, keeping it stock will bring more $, if you have to do non body mods build a frame. Or keep this one stock and find a cut up project someone else started to play with.

Believe me I thought long & hard to the point of feeling guilty about cutting the frame in this truck to weld in the Camaro subframe, but the fact remained that I had no plans of selling it & I wanted a driver that I, my wife & kids "soon to be driving" could drive around with the "safety & luxury" of modern IFS, disc brakes & power steering.
Also you must understand that these trucks are not readily availible here in Australia they are personal imports & at $5000 minimum shipping cost I;m wasn't prepered to ship in a sh*tter.

Hey red, theres not one thing wrong with making your truck drive safer and keep up with traffic. It's yours do as you see fit. BTW I like your plans. keep us posted

update that frame and make it a nice driver.No reason not to update 45+ years of technology.
At the end of the days its a truck.
And I love the look of the paint right now.

It is the same reason that a nice new pair of Levis 501 jeans sell for $20. but if they have a couple of faded spots or even holes in them, the kids will shell out $75 and more for them.
Old paint tells a story like a Norman Rockwell painting. His paintings were mostly of middle to lower class Americana, weathered paint is a snap shot of American auto history.

Thanks for all the complements fella's, I am slowly gathering pics to do a build thread eventually. Currently I have the sub frame squared up & tacked in, & I have just disasembled the 348 & sent it off to the machine shop. I dont mean to hijack Bobs thread, he did want to see weathered trucks so hear is acouple more pics I saved from another forum.

That red one is nice, just needs a hood. Still running leaves in the front and sitting about the same height as my black one I'd guess.



This is the way I bought the truck, believe me I would've preferred that it had original paint on it even if it was thin. So far though, the truck appears to be 99% rust free. It came from Reno, Nevada and was a California built truck and I was told it spent it's whole life in the desert. We'll see what kinda shape the old girl's really in when I get her black dress off !

Anymore original 55-59 pics out there? This one is the closest I've seen to a nice weathered truck but yeah it's fake...

Fauxtina is just that, faux. My son's truck is a compilation of 13 trucks (ADs and others). The frame, wiring, and drivetrain are done to be driven and driven well and safe. The body will get done when it gets done. It isn't done to be fake, the doors have a plumbing shop name that was cool enough I bought a truck out of a field to save them. To each his own, though.

Dan, I meant no disrespect towards these trucks or their owners when I said the paint on the truck above was "fake". The way the "fauxtina" trucks are painted takes nothing away from all the hard work that it takes to build a nice, safe truck. I totally understand the reasoning behind putting it on the road in primer or 'tina, or original paint (vintage lettering is the coolest)

I'm pretty sure when I get mine running (hopefully by end of summer) it will be in primer too. I may just do some faux patina with a hunting lodge theme on the doors. When we were elk hunting my camp was always known as Mingo's Bar and Grille for its hospitality and good times around the campfire.

I didn't take it negative towards me or our truck. I'm just really sick of the rat rod crowd who booger weld, make stuff unsafe, and focus on skullz and crozz bonez on the side with some made up shop name and then scuff the paint in various places so it "has the look." You can't duplicate the paint on Rednek13x picture above.

I like the style of the blue one you have shown but like you said, it is fake. It is still very cool but if you've gone to the point of painting it, paint it, don't sand it off to make it look like you didn't paint it!!

Here's what 23 years of use and 32 more years of setting in the same spot produces for patina. My dad bought this new and I'm getting ready to start restoring it. Plan to bring it back to what it looked like when he bought it. Before all the rusting, it was Regal Blue with an Arabian Ivory roof. Haven't done much yet, but do have it running and moving under it's own power.
