Good idea that I'd like to share

So my parents started arguing about lasagna, of all things, so I was tired of hearing them bickering and decided to go sit in my truck and rock out. I cranked up some Metallica and finally got my system dialed in just right. I was sitting there thinking, wondering what to do with that delete plate I made for the radio (since I wussed out and decided not to cut the dash). Then it hit me. I'm going to paint a piece of sheetmetal black and mount it behind the dash, then mount two wiper switches where the knobs would have been. To top it off, I'll mount an LCD clock in the center. No more wasted space! I'll post some pics once I get around to doing it, but first I've gotta get new wheels and put my 5-speed in.

Re: Good idea that I'd like to share

Lol. Of course someone would ask about the lasagna. The deal was that my mom made it the exact same way that she always does and my idiot dad decided to complain about it. I've learned to keep my mouth shut at appropriate times and unfortunately he hasn't figured that one out yet. Mom said this morning that it was his fault though, because he bought the wrong ingredients when he went to the store for her. Oh well. They're both over it now. But yeah, faux radio is the idea. It'll be a while yet before I can gather up the supplies. New wheels and tires come first so I can get it inspected this month, but the rims are on backorder and won't be shipped out until April 20th! I just might do it before then to keep me occupied though. At least we have one Metallica fan out there. If you were to look at me, I'd be the last person you'd expect to listen to hard rock. I usually wear a cowboy hat and boots to college.

Wow, $35 for a wiper switch? Seriously? Come on LMC... I'm going to hit up the hardware store later. Geez. Maybe Radio Shack. I know they have a switch that's almost the exact same. Then I just gotta order new chrome rings and knobs.

Re: Good idea that I'd like to share

One of my best buds in high school (a whole whoppin year ago) always used to sit in his 72 before school and jam to Metallica.

He was born and raised in our lil po-dunk hick town, went to Jr. Olympic qualifier for Skeet, it's kinda amusing.

Re: Good idea that I'd like to share

Haha. Us country folk can be deceiving some times. I've always wanted to ride around with a 12 gauge mounted to the back glass just because I can, but then there's the problem of someone breaking into your truck just to steal your gun. I suppose you could always tie a string to the trigger and the other end to the door handle to scare people away, but I think the law might frown upon that one. I just graduated high school myself. Class of '09. Sometimes I wish I could go back...

Re: Good idea that I'd like to share

Good ideas, but what about an analog clock? yes they are harder to read at least for me..I'll admit it. But it would probably look alot more at home in your truck. actually now that I think of it, if your truck is a DD, you'd probably be better off with the digital but, just another thought. Post some pics when you do the dash.

Re: Good idea that I'd like to share

Well, my truck isn't a DD, but I think I'm going to go with the digital. I want one of the rectangular black ones that you can get at O'Reilly or Walmart. I think it would compliment the rectangular opening where the radio face would have been. On the plus side, I've found some rotary switches at Radio Shack that should work in place of the wiper switches. That'll save me about $64. I don't know why those things are so darn expensive. There's not much to them.

Re: Good idea that I'd like to share

I cut out a delete plate and mounted my 2 air ride guages....there a tight fit but I didn't cut mt A/C dash!!!....I was going to add a couple switches in the knob holes but couldn't figure out what to hook up to them ( air ride toggles where a thought but I didn't want anything sticking out..if I do it I want a nice push on/off button)

Re: Good idea that I'd like to share

THe PO had cut my dash for a newer type cd player. I have no need for a radio because my truck is going to be used for a street/strip toy only. I made an aluminum plate and mounted my switch for the electric fuel pump. I am also going to be changing to an electric fan and plan on mounting the switch for that in the same panel. Depending on what I do for gauges I might put an oil pressure and water temp gauge in there too. I painted the panel black to match my dash and counter sank the 4 screws. If I hadnt put a switch in it I dont think it would be noticable.
