a-arm bushing removal
I have a '78 front end on my 70 and am rebuilding whole front end. I have it apart and don't know how to get the bushings and the rod out of the a-arm. do I have to use a machine shop? thanks

I think they screw on at each end.

Piece 'o' cake.
First, put the control arm in a strong bench vise. You'll have to use a breaker bar to knock it loose - the longer and thicker (3/4" drive maybe) is the best. You'll have to get a couple of large sockets for this (for front-end work I have a set of large sockets 1 1/8" down to 1" that's 3/4" drive). Put the socket on and get your weight on it. You'll break them loose. Be careful using the blue torch heating them up. You'll boil the grease and make one hell of a mess.

I already have the nuts off of the end- I just don't know how to get the rod out of the bushings and the bushings out of the arm

I have to do that job soon...I was told you usually have to take them to get pressed out, thats why I have put it off for so long

well since ya have a 78 front end under your truck.
what i did,since the 73 and up use rubber bushings,was take them off and used a vice and a air chisle and knocked em out. i then used the shafts and nuts to press them back in. was hard at first but after the first one ya get the hang of it.

By far the easiest way is to torch them out let the rubber burn out and then you can just cut the cup carefully and chisel them out or get them pressed out. I just did this on a 64 impala the other day works like a damn
