Quick dash question.

So on my '63 the PO put wood grain on the glovebox, ash tray, and heater control nobs. It looks as though it was glued on and doesn't come off well. I was talking with the painter and he had no idea how to get it off.

So that brings me to my question. Are there replacement glove box doors, heater control covers, and ashtrays out there? I was looking through LMC but didn't see anything as with other catalogs. Any input would greatly be appreciated. Thanks.

If it was glued to the paint a little paint stripper in behind it will loosen it up and it should come right off with a little time and effort. When done just finish stripping and repaint.

also, if glued (ewwww) there is a product called "goo gone" available at home depot that might help. Might now, but might be worth a try.

no on the repros, would have to find some used...

You could try a heat gun to soften the glue enough to peel it off, then use goo gone to remove the rest of the residue. If it's only on metal you could try sanding it off, go slow and use a finer grit than you think and lots of extra elbow grease not to mess up the metal under too much.

Well these are the best pictures I have right now. it feels as though it was gorilla or super glued on. I was working on getting the wood off around the radio and barely any came off with the tricks described. it looks disgusting and doesn't want to come off. Now where do I go?

I like that! mainly because it isn't protruding from the metal and can be repainted as needed. Mine looks like that cheap boarding they would put up in old campers or trailers.

worse case......take the ash tray, heater face and glove box door off and sand blast them, prime and repaint them. thats what i had to do to my ash tray and it came out like new.

Another possible solution for breaking the bond is lighter fluid. 3M markets 8984 General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner, and near as I can tell its straight lighter fluid. I was introduced to it about 20 years ago as the solution to removing pin striping tape from car bodies. When all else fails this does release every adhesive I’ve encountered. Obviously it's an extreme fire hazard so be careful if you decide to try it.

Tuckers truck parts has used stuff but I don't know what their inventory. I have also gotten used parts from Dan's Classics in Portland, Oregon.
