Leaf spring questions
I'm new to leaf springs, seems all my other vehicles I've owned always had coils.
So I have a few questions pertaining to the leaf springs on a 69 C30 1 ton. In picture #1, what is the part that sits on top of the spring? It's the part that is rusted away. Is this available anywhere? In picture #2, there is a long bolt that goes through all the leaves. Both bolts are badly in need of replacing as they are thin due to rust. Can these be removed and how? Picture #3 shows the bottom piece that the shackle bolts attach to. Are these available anywhere? (I did find new shackle bolts, the U shaped bolts w/nuts) Thanks, Bob

Re: Leaf spring questions
Bob the center bolt (pic 2) should have come out with the spring. It is just rusted in the perch. penetrating oil and a whack or two with a hammer should get it out. Any parts store shoud have one. The top plate and lower clamp plate I cant help on. Maybe used parts from the parts board.

Re: Leaf spring questions
Thanks John! Those things are rusted in there big time, I tripped over one today and it didn't budge! I thought it might be threaded in.

Re: Leaf spring questions
I have basically the same exact questions. Bob did you ever find anything else out or can anyone else help out?

Re: Leaf spring questions
Bob,
I may have the shackle retainer, or whatever it's called. I'll check tomorrow. The spring pin bolts should be available at any spring shop. Check the 4x4 lift shops. If you can't find them let me know and I can get them. The first pic is probably what's left of a rubber bumper. |

Re: Leaf spring questions
Well I never did get those bolts to come out so I cut it off flush and then just carefully drilled the pieces out. Was real easy. Just don't drill too deep!
I saw new bolts in a catalog somewhere (Classic Chevy possibly) with the round head but all I did was use grade 8 bolts that I rounded the head off so it fit into the hole. The part on the top of the springs I found in a junkyard on another 69 C30. They were actually big metal blocks but mine rusted away as shown. I also got the lower shackle parts from that truck. I bought new grade 8 U bolts from Rock auto which completed the job. Bob
