brake trouble on the '62. little help, please?

Yesterday while driving through town, some idiot turned in front of me.
I had to slam on he brakes, hard enough the lock and skid.
When I went to take off, I noticed the truck pulling hard left.
After about a mile, the brake started smoking. I had to call a rollback.
I didn't get home until dark and never got a chance to check it out.
I'm not the worlds best mechanic, but I can't afford a huge bill.
My question: what exactly should I expect when I pull the drums?
Maybe just dirt and corrosion keeping the pads from retracting?
maybe a stuck piston. I'm just looking for your been there,
done that story. Thanks guys.

Re: brake trouble on the '62. little help, please?

First off if it still is stuck I would try driving it forward and back to see if it loosens up ,also brake the breeders loose to make sure you dont have a hose that has gone bad inside , if not you will have to try to back off the adjuster til it turns or you will be some frustrated tring to remove it with it locked up ... I am asumming it is a drum brake truck ?? if it is discs and it doesnt release upon braking the bleeders free , you should be able to pry the caliper off .......

Re: brake trouble on the '62. little help, please?

A little more info. It's the front brake. Drum, not disc.
Brakes were working fine until the lockdown.
All three other wheels seemed to roll fine.
Truck rolled backwards off the rollback,
But would not roll forward without great effort.
Thanks, Todd.

I don`t believe the 62`s had self adjusters... maybe wrong....I`m thinking more like a retractor spring broke...!

jack the end that has the problem, spin the wheel. Is it draging, or making any strange sounds? I would take the wheel and drum off and see if any thing broke or came loose. Keep us posted

I agree with rich. sounds like a retractor spring broke. I just finished messing with the brakes on my 61, kind of a pain

Re: brake trouble on the '62. little help, please?

Well. I had to beat the drum off with a big hammer.
The wheel cylinder was stuck open and wouldn't let
the springs retract. New wheel cylinder $20. Not too bad.
About half a can of pb blaster before I started turning bolts
Seemed like a good idea. Everything came off fine.
Thanks guys, always a big help in times of need

Re: brake trouble on the '62. little help, please?

Did you have to remove the backing plate to get the wheel cylinder off? On my 61 3/4 ton the wheel cylinders were called out to be the same from front to back but they weren't. I had to get a rebuild kit and put the old ones back in.
