high amp alternator questions???
I have an 87 swb that I will be running a stereo system on consisting of one 12 inch sub and front components and rear 6x9's I will have two amps for this system and have a new optima yellow top battery. I am currently running a stock alternator and realize this will not be enough amperage to cover the load of a stereo system and a/c. My question is if anyone has something similar to this setup and if so what alternator amperage are you running? last but not least where would you guys reccomend i score one of these alternators? any help is much appreciated as always guys.
thanks -Ayres |

Re: high amp alternator questions???
I got a 140 amp alternator from National Quick Start, but I don't drive my truck enough to know if it was a big improvement. Here is a link to their FAQ page, which has some interesting information, like the need to increase the cable size from your alternator to battery when you get a high output alternator. If you call them them seem very knowledgeable about alternators and what you would need for your square. There are different frame sizes for Delco alternators, and the one I got was bigger than the stock one, so it just barely fit the bracket (I think I had to modify it a bit). They also supplied me with an adapter connector so the new alternator would work with the old harness. I don't have a sound blaster system so I don't know what you need. I just wanted more alternator output to keep my dual start battery setup charged in my big block.
