original seat upholstery - 72 custom deluxe
hey all,
was wondering if anyone has tracked down the supplier to GM for the cloth material on a custom deluxe truck. the 2nd row seat on my 72 burb is in great shape. but the front seat needs the cloth panels replaced big time. however, the vinyl is good for reuse and i'd like to just have it patched by a local shop. if i had to redo the interior i'd just get it reproduction and pay the big $$$. but the vendors use cloth with a different pattern. i'm trying to keep that original factory look and have everything match. Re: original seat upholstery - 72 custom deluxe
SMS has the original colors and pattern cloth/vinyl for my 68, so I am sure they have the same for a 72.

Re: original seat upholstery - 72 custom deluxe
you da man, Vectorit!
Doug from SMS has already gotten back to me (on a saturday?) and is going to send me a sample. A touch pricy at $89 a yard (x 60" wide) but thankfully it won't take more than a couple yards to fix my front seat good as new. i started keep a light colored blanket on the 2nd row to protect it from the sun when not hauling extra passengers or displaying the truck at car shows. |

Re: original seat upholstery - 72 custom deluxe
Doug will set you up.
He and did a lot of communication over my side panels, and in the end he came through and I got exactly what I wanted. Yea, they are a bit pricey. But if they give me exactly what I want, and are just as concerned about authenticity as I am... I'm happy to spend money on them. Try to mention the board, and even mention my user name. Maybe you will get a little bit of discount?

Re: original seat upholstery - 72 custom deluxe
i got my sample in the mail today. didn't realize how much that second row had faded (more gray than blue). but it is still in good shape otherwise so i will just repair the front seat and in another 40 years they will match 100%.

Re: original seat upholstery - 72 custom deluxe
I have the same Burb and the same problem. My second row seat is gorgeous, but the drivers cloth is ripped up.The vinyl is also in great shape, just one tear on the small strip of vinyl on the top side seat to the far drivers side.Could easily be replaced.Could you please post a pic of the sample? Thanks

Re: original seat upholstery - 72 custom deluxe
Flint70step....don't ever tell me where you live....i want that narrow 2nd row seat to add a third row to my burb there was a guy on the west coast (washington i think) that was selling the same exact seat on craigslist a few months ago. he had it listed a couple times but shipping would likely have been insane. the seat had been in storage since the mid 80's and was in really nice shape.
i'm including the photo you wanted. as i said before, the original cloth material on my seat has faded to slightly more gray. the replacement cloth will match the blue vinyl perfectly. i would suggest you cover the seat (white sheet to reflect sun and heat would be best) if the truck sits outside for any length of time...like mine does protect it from fading more. you can get your own free sample from SMS at http://www.smsautofabrics.com/ [IMG][/IMG] Last edited by capev86; 06-04-2011 at 12:15 PM. |

Thanks for the link as well, much appreciated

Re: original seat upholstery - 72 custom deluxe
you have more options (third seat, a/c, radio, trim, tinted glass, 350/auto, sway bar, etc.) while mine is a 3/4 ton. but yes, very similar trucks
note that the base code is the same only it specifies c10 vs c20....... CE10916 vs. CE20916 i have added the factory tach and vacuum gauges (repro add on kit) and have sway bars from CPP. i also installed a new 4 core radiator for better cooling (trailer towing) which will be plenty for that little 307 with no a/c or automatic putting extra load on it. i have the original 7 blade fan from my dad's 72 burb installed as part of a complete cooling system upgrade. and i have the chrome cab lights from his truck (need to be re chromed) and a pair of short arm tripod mirrors (like his truck had also) because those stupid "sport mirrors" don't belong on a REAL truck. i want to go 3 row on the seating (but keep the wide second row bench). interesting that your interior is blue yet the truck has the two tone exterior with white roof like my dad's did. i wish my truck had the tinted windows like my dad's 72 custom deluxe (one of those rare highlander dealer-promo trucks) but not gonna go to the trouble and expense of swapping it out. his truck even had the tilt wheel, but they were only available with floor shift or automatics and won't work with the 3 on the tree arrangement. if you want to upgrade your front sway bar size, find an 80's 1 ton chevy 2wd/dually or camper special package with the 1-1/4" dia. sway bar. swap the brackets and bushings from the donor truck also for the factory look. and you could sell the original sway bar to another forum member! Re: original seat upholstery - 72 custom deluxe
recently took another peak under the aftermarket (i.e. saddle blanket crap) cover on the front seat and it looks like i will have to replace much of the vinyl also (the seat really got ripped up somehow).
anyone know of a vendor that carries the custom deluxe style vinyl upholstery. all i see are kits with the scroll pattern flanking each cloth panel (cheyenne style) instead of the scroll "rectangles" in the middle. Last edited by capev86; 11-04-2011 at 08:51 PM. |

Re: original seat upholstery - 72 custom deluxe
never seen that style before......is that a variation created by the aftermarket or actual duplicate of an original GM pattern? (year?). what company did you go with?
i need a repro of the style where the scroll forms rectangles - found on the custom deluxe and the highlander optioned burbs (only they had the plaid cloth instead of regular cloth panels). |

Re: original seat upholstery - 72 custom deluxe
If you are asking about my red one...that is a stock 1969 GMC seat pattern. The insert is the original upholstery I got from SMS. I was able to use my ooriginal vinyl.
