Starter Problem

Ok guys, I dropped a 78 model 350 in my 64. I kept the original 6 cylinder's 3 speed tranny with the original bell housing. I tried to install the 78 model starter and it won't mount up. Looking at the picture of an original starter for a 64 chevy w/283 & 3 speed. It looks like the top flange bolt hole will hit the block. I have not bought it yet but looking at everything i don't see how it will work. Any ideas what i have to do in this situation???? I did read in another thread on here about this somewhat. However, Something under there just doesn't look right to me. I guess i just need a good nights sleep and look it over again tomorrow, LOL.

swap out the nose with the old starter & crank 'er up. don't forget to install the starter support on the end.

ok let's try this again. i re read your post & it looks like you don't have the 6 cyl starter at all. the correct starter will bolt to the front face of the clutch housing with 3 bolts. it is a close fit to get to the top bolt but it will clear. did you use the old 6 cyl flywheel? if you did it should all match up when you get a starter with the correct nose on it.

Thanks, Yes, i am using everything from the old I6. I will pick up a new I6 starter. Thanks for the input.

If you're still using the original cast iron bellhousing, then you will have to use a starter that bolts to the bellhousing. A block mounted starter will not work.
