72 fuel level sending unit.
Got a 72 c10 and my local auto parts dealer said he can not get a oem replacement. Any advice? How hard would it be to repair. Wire to float is brand new. As is wiring to gauge. Haven't pulled the float since the tank is full. Could the gauge be bad?

Re: 72 fuel level sending unit.
Take the sending unit wire off at the sender and turn the key on. the gauge should go to past full about the three o"clock position. Then ground the same wire and the gauge should go to empty. If the gauge doesn't move then make sure you have power to the gauge. some times the wire on the sender inside the tank breaks and it can be re-soldered but the resistor unit on the sender itself is not fixable.

Re: 72 fuel level sending unit.
Welcome to the site...
If you find that the gauge is working as per above instructions, order a sending unit complete from local vendors on this site. Even if you find out you can fix it, you're better off having the complete unit just in case. It's about $40 + shipping. Go to "Home" on this site and on the left hand side you will see a menu. Click on "Vendors" and you will see all of the vendors that support this site and can get you just about anything you want for these old trucks. Also, no need to empty the tank out. You can do the replacement by moving the seat forward. If you do decide to replace it be sure and check back with us for help in removal and installation tips. Some of us have done it a few times. |
