http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1964-...item19c62227f2

Just saw this on Ebay......

I have never heard of a 6 cyl 305 big block. I thought they had a V6 or V8 cyl 305 didn't they?
but not an inline-6....

Re: Is this right? 6cyl 305 big block?

Some one who did not know mistook it for a 348 or a 409, the shape of the heads and the valve covers to the uneducated look a lot like a big block, they just forgot to count the spark plugs. ha ha Kieth

I just read the ad, her called it a 6 cyclinder, it looks like a pretty nice truck for the money.......

Re: Is this right? 6cyl 305 big block?

those GMC V-6's are quite commonly called big block V-6's because their bore is 4.25" (which I believe is the same bore as a 454) on the 305, which is the smallest one. The biggest one is a 478.

The GMC V6 probably does quality as a big block in some regards. Those things are huge and I'm pretty sure they weigh over 800 pounds!

Re: Is this right? 6cyl 305 big block?

ive heard of these referred to as big blocks also - but the trick is to not confuse them with chev motor terminology - yes, 305 v8 in a chev is a small block (and not available in 60-66 trucks) while a 305 v6 is a GMC motor that IS available in our early-mid 60's trucks as long as they were gmc - and still not sure if they classified it or referred to it as a big block, so I normally don't say those words when talkin about a gmc - I'm not sure what would be their "small block"....

Re: Is this right? 6cyl 305 big block?

Here's 2 305s; a V8 and a V6. I would definitely call the V6 a big block.

Re: Is this right? 6cyl 305 big block?

A big block is a 396 427 454 etc v8..
a small block is a 283 327 350 etc v8...
That v6, is just that, a v6

Re: Is this right? 6cyl 305 big block?

they were commonly known as big blocks not actual big blocks but when they have a bigger bore than a 427... and get the same if not worse mpg than i would definately call it a big block, v6 or not

Re: Is this right? 6cyl 305 big block?

i think we're splitting terms/mixing nicknames - chev, f$%d, Chry%$er typically categorize engines into big or small block categories - has nothing to do with cubic inches, has to do with block design group. i.e. consider that a 396 is a chev big block and chev 400 is a small block... (and note that the "8-400" badge on a 71-72 Cheyenne is actually a "402" - i.e. a punched out 396 - a true big block). ANYHoo, small block chevs share a common block and big block chevs share a common block - same goes for F$%d and some other makes. But not sure GMC actually did this - and doesn't matter really I guess. But much of the argument above is based on what we know as big and small block "Chevrolets" and relating that to the cubic inch or # of cylinders - which is not a valid argument. Big and small block is a relative term, relates to a common "family" of common-design engine blocks, etc not the displacement or # of cylinders - it's kind of a coinkidink that, generally speaking, bigger cubic inch engines tend to be big blocks, and smaller cubic engines tend to be smaller blocks (but again, consider the 396/400 discussion to provide the reason as to why this is coincidence only).

My 2 cents. Now whether that is a BIG 2 cents or a SMALL 2 cents, I don't know.

Re: Is this right? 6cyl 305 big block?

I think of it as a GMC big block V6. Its heavy duty like "commercial" duty.

No...its not the same as the traditional big block....but considering the 2.8L to 3.8L V6 motors produced by GM and other company's, and the 4.3 V6 made from a sbc -2 cylinders...a 60's 5.0L V6....is a big block V6.

Plus Chevy also has a 427 small block.

Re: Is this right? 6cyl 305 big block?

good point creep, a traditional small block can be bored and stroked to 427, but it's not from the factory that way. Then again, you CAN get a modern LS engine from the factory in 427 cubes. More fuel to the fire....

64GMChorsepower, I bet you never dreamed you'd get so many folks waxing on about big vs small blocks, did you? You never know what you can stir up on this forum! No wrong answers, and all interesting points.
